| annasocial's Full Review: Unreal Tournament for Windows |
I started playing Unreal Tournament demo after the company I work for started a dedicated server for the game. I was amazed at the intricate graphics and non-stop action. I finally got to play the full version and found out I was missing tons of awesome play by just playing with the demo, so acquired my own full version.
The premise of the game is that you're a deep space miner who has been given the chance to compete in the Unreal Tournament, a free for all death match created by a gigantic multi-media conglomerate for the viewing entertainment of billions (not to mention they're making tons of money off of all the killing). You get to compete against a plethora of other bloodthirsty people to become the champion of Unreal Tournament.
There are some great playing options with the full version of this game. Capture the Flag requires that you work with other people on your team to acquire the other team's flag while protecting your own, while in Domination you have to keep several different areas secure to add up points to win the match. Deathmatch is just that, you try and "frag" (kill) the allotted amount of people to win. Assault has more of a point to it than just killing things that move; you are given objectives (usually to secure an area or destroy an item) that you must accomplish in a certain amount of time to win the match.
The character skins and weaponry are very well rendered, with interesting variation on old themes from other shoot-em-up games. I enjoy the selection of being either male or female. Gives a fresh look to good old blocky men. The option that intrigues me the most though is the ability of "taunting" other players, gives me tons of laughs if they're placed at the right time. The gore factor (nothing to do with a certain vice-president) seems to be fairly low as well. Sure, you're blowing people up, but there's not too much fake splatting noises and gratuitous blood.
Unreal Tournament creates a new standard in terms of playing online. Play online is as great as playing by yourself and this time the 'bots that you're so used to playing aren't predictable, they are other users. You will need a decent system to play this game to its fullest both by yourself and online. Its very graphics intense, but beautifully rendered, with dozens of maps to be played. A definite must for any gamer, online or offline.
