| ImAznSoImRight's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII for PlayStation 1 |
Now that FF8 has become one of PSX's "Greatest Hits" along with FF7, I think it's a good time to say my piece. Well, I'll be honest and say that I did not purchase nor played FF8 until the price drop to 20 bucks.
I am a GREAT fan of Square Soft's works. I've played FF2, FF3/FF6, FF7, FF8, Chrono Trigger, Secret Of Mana, Xenogears, Tobal, Bushido Blade, Ehrgeiz, FF Legend 2 (gameboy)and a lot of others. But the most famous from Square are the Final Fantasy Series. But I must say that when I got into FF8...I was deeply disappointed.
I think that Square Soft is concentrating TOO much on CGI and leaving the storyline, characters, and the world depleted from their original glory. I remember back in FF2, where the graphics are NOTHING compared to FF7 & 8, but the storyline and the development of the characters more than made up for it.
After the horrible let down of Final Fantasy VII, I was reluctant to buy Final Fantasy VIII, but I did anyway a year after its debut in America. I was hoping for an improvement, FF8 is a game spanned over 4 CDs! But it was only because the CGI's took up so much memory. I am on the fourth disc now, going up against Ultimecia and I've only had this game for a week. I don't really want to beat it because, well...I'm afraid to be let down again.
What ever happened to the big ass worlds Square used to make? What happened to the "figure out where you're supposed to go next" story? Final Fantasy VIII is by FAR the MOST GUIDED RPG game I have ever played! They actually HIGHLIGHT the areas of where you're supposed to go!! Square is taking out the fun of their RPG's...what good is it gonna be if it's like watching a movie? I want some good old school FF interaction dammit!
For people who are true Square Soft gamers, they know that Final Fantasy VII and VIII were HUGE LET DOWNS. One review of Final Fantasy VIII said it best when..."I recommend buying Final Fantasy Anthropology." Yea, the old school FF games KICKED ASS!!!
Final Fantasy IX is coming out this November 14 in America. I haven't done any research about it's quality, but I wonder if it's just gonna be another big disappointment for the third time....
and by the way...I gave this game a rating of "2" because compared to the other FF games...YES, IT DOES SUCK.
Oh yea...I've glanced the other opinions of this game and the majority seems to actually like Final Fantasy VII and VIII...EWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys must've been on something when you were playing to like those two!!! (hahaha just a lil joke)
UPDATE
Well, I just wanted to say that I have thought about the time that I invested in FF VIII, and my reactions to everything were "oh," instead of the usual "OOOOOHHH!!!!" I actually fell asleep while playing VIII....hahahaha, that doesn't sound to good huh?
I would have to say that my biggest disappointment to this game is the challenge. I suppose the monsters aren't exactly TOUGHER, they just take longer to beat. I don't like the junctioning as it does take up time, and how you can only have a select number of executable selections in your battle menu. Also, I liked the limit break idea from FF VII, but it is only available when your HP is low or you cast magic.
What I did like was that there were no MPs, which means you can cast magic like crazy, but that put too much emphasis on relying on magic to beat monsters and bosses. I cannot recall any boss where I did not summon a GF or use any magic.
The challenge was non-existent in FF VIII, and BARELY breathing in FF VII, hahah, ion FF VII, the last boss was so easy to beat, the weapons in the American version were harder!! I just cheated like crazy and put on the slash x4 and the attack twice materia on Cloud and have the other two mimic....9999 per hit for 8 hits per person! damn, i just held down the button and waited for the CGI.
And that brings up another aspect. I usually like how you can level up your guys to 99 and have 9999 HPs and 999 MPs...you can't do that in FF VII or VIII without having an aid of some sort. MAAAAAAAN...freak the graphics...bring back the OLD SCHOOL QUALITY!!!
I MUCH RATHER PLAY FF LEGEND II FOR GAMEBOY THAN FF VIII ON PSX!!!!!!
