Pat_the_Great's Full Review: The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time for Nintendo 6...
Ah yes, the infamous successor to the old Zelda games of yore. I remember the days when Link to the Past(SNES) was the new thing...
Although The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of the long-awaited games for the Nintendo 64, and easily one of the best-selling games for the Nintendo 64, it was hardly worth the hype.
While the graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay fluid (Very little to none in the way of choppiness or polygon overlap) the plot is rather ho-hum (whoopee, we get to save the world from Evil. Again.) and the puzzles are simply tedious and boring.
Ocarina of Time has some great things- you can go fishing, ride a horse, play at a shooting gallery, and many other little mini-games that add to the depth of the game. You can even change the pitch of the Ocarina while playing it- like a real Ocarina would! It's also got it's own internal clock, with the sun rising and setting. Some events can only be triggered at night, and others during the day. There are secrets galore. Also, the world is massive. Really big.
Unfortunately, it's got a great combat engine. Why is this unfortunate? Because it doesn't USE it. Despite the depth of the sword combat, there is only one enemy who actually requires some sort of skill with the sword to beat. Other than that, it's entirely too easy in terms of combat.
The puzzles are intriguing at first but definitely get monotonous and boring after a while. The hookshot (a chain with a hook at the end which you shoot to grapple onto things) adds an extra dimension to the puzzles but overuses it.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a passable game, but isn't a good match for the game engine. Nintendo wasted a good game by putting Myst inside a great combat system, producing a boring puzzle game with a wonderful (if rarely used) combat system. Pick this one up if you've got a hankering for an Adventure/RPG type game. Otherwise, save the money.
