| tanta07's Full Review: Gran Turismo 1 for PlayStation 1 |
I was still in college a couple of years ago when Gran Turismo came out, and one of my roommates had rented it on a whim. We spent the entire weekend thoroughly entranced with the game; our every waking hour was spent playing the fabulous racing simulation. We were sold; we all split the cost of buying the game right after returning the rented version.
For those of you no familiar with Gran Turismo, here it is in a nutshell: you start the game out with a crappy car, no license, and no racing experience. You have to basically spend the next several hours completing ever-increasing-in-difficulty driving tests in order to get your license. Once you have the license, you can then participate in races to gain money to upgrade your crappy car (or trade it in, if you wish). The theory is simple enough; the true fun is in the details.
This game is severely addictive. I became very obsessed with upgrading my car, so I could win more races, so I could get more money, so I could upgrade my car, so I could win more races...(pant, pant). And along the way, you can also try to get a higher level license to compete in harder races for more money. Again, simple in theory, but loads of fun.
The graphics are simply gorgeous in this game. Now that Gran Turismo 2 has been released, as well as other groundbreaking games like Final Fantasy VIII, the graphics do not look nearly as fantastic, but they are still very good. The cars are very detailed and look great, but they do not sustain damage during races (that's only a minor problem, though). The tracks are also extremely detailed and challenging, with some hair-pin turns that will mess you up big time the first few times you race.
If you're a fan of racing or just cars in general, Gran Turismo will be a revelation to you. If you are only interested in instant gratification in games, Gran Turismo will not be your cup of tea. The game requires many hours of your time and patience before you get anywhere near good, so if you have a short attention span, you might want to look elsewhere. However, if you like a good challenge and you are not afraid of getting totally engrossed in a game until sleep deprivation and starvation tear you away from it, go out and get Gran Turismo NOW! It's now a Greatest Hits selection, so the $20 it will set you back will end up looking like a wise investment considering the weeks and weeks of enjoyment it will give you.
