So here comes Gunman. For me, yet another FPS. One of (too) many. A friend of mine told me to try it, even though he knows what I think about games where the speed of your fingers is more important than the speed of your brain.
I have to admit it: this is not a bad game. Whereas serious FPS-fans will presumably find this game a clone, a repetition or plainly not difficult enough, I recommend it for people who's arthritis-ridden fingers are no match for the young 'Quake III Arena'-guns out there. The number of keys one needs to press is quite limited, which makes for easy game-play, even in combination with the mouse. This game asks quite a lot from the brains as well. There's no barging into rooms, set the Mega-blaster to 'wish 'em dead' and pull the trigger all the time. Careful intrusions, the occasional sniping, but also plain violent grenade-throwing gives Gunman a nice balance. At one stage, you even get to drive around in a tank. It's good that its radius is severely limited, as its indestructibility would completely unbalance the game, but it is fun to be able to blast everything in sight, for a change. Because the normal state of things in the game is that you are quite vulnerable to about everything that walks around, unless you shoot it first. But: different targets need different approaches. You can shoot the feeble human targets with your pistol, machine-gun or shotgun. But those are remarkably weak against the drones (robots) that you encounter. For them electricity-based blasters are the recommendable thing. Think before you shoot, is the motto.
As is the trend, this game also has a story-line. A thin one, I must say. If you strip it to the bone, it basically comes down to: if it moves, shoot it. Then again, this is an FPS, not an RPG.
The graphics and sound of the game are well up to scratch with what one expects in 2000. In 2001, however, they are already outdated.
Overall, this is an entertaining game, certainly not the best in it's genre, but by far more not the worst.
