| abloch's Full Review: Knockout Kings '99 |
I don't know about my fellow pugilists out there and maybe its just me but I just can't seem to find a boxing game that captures my love for the sport. I was hoping, I mean really hoping that Knockout Kings would do it for me. Look at the game and it exudes machismo and gets the fists a flayling but I digress and regress back it to this pit of darkness that is Knockout Kings...
THE GAME:
The game itself has great features , you can be virtually anyone you wanna be and in any weight class and the graphics are good, solid and add some realisim to the game. The problem is either you master this game and you win every fight or you don't master it and you get bored senseless. I was playing this game against my buddy and we were both bored out of our minds. I think it might just be that boxing does not translate well into an exciting video game.
CONTROL:
learning to control the fighters takes time but at the end of the day you can't tell the difference between an upper cut and a jab but it is cool to knockout your opponent. The problem is that I wasn't able to really gain control that enabled me to do this and my thumb was feeling the effects of a thrasing laid on me by the computer
GRAPHICS:
I will say that the graphics are good and you are able to make out fighters faces and their reactions to body blows and haymakers but every boxing game manages to capture that aspect of the sport.
SOUND:
I don't think people play this game for the sound but it is there . if you listen close enogh I think you can hear Don King counting his $$$$
Overall:
This game has a lot of options but it failed to inspire me to play all night long like I have played EA Sports hockey or football. The other thing that bugs me about this game is that you never feel like your in control. It feels like the computer could knock you out at any second while you have to work up a sweat and waste valuable thumb energy just to land an effective jab!!
