Bigpuffa's Full Review: WWF: No Mercie for Nintendo 64
I have played pretty much every wrestling game that has made it to the states. Lately THQ has made my experiences much better, as i no longer have to deal with Acclaim's poor gameplay but numerous options. I have given EA every chance in the world to convince me to buy their product, but come on! Backstage Assault doesn't hold a candle to No Mercy!
No Mercy is decked out this time. THQ took everything good about wrestling games of the past, plus looked at the bad, and decided that their next game would be the most superior wrestling game to date.
WWF No Mercy has over 70 wrestlers (including Andre the Giant, Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, Lita, and even the Fabulous Moolah, as well as the whole WWF Roster). Many of these wrestlers have to be unlocked during gameplay such as different versions of championship modes, by earning money and buying them, or by competing in Survival Mode.
The Championship Modes consist of 7 different belts to contend for, each one that the WWF currently has. As you win the belt and defend it, you move percentage points toward the goal of 100% in each category. When you win the titles they then become available whenever you want (create a pay per view, put it up in a Royal Rumble, Ironman Match lasting 60 minutes, or how about defending the tag team titles in a tag team ladder match?).
Survival mode let's you unlock a hidden character every 20 entrants into this royal rumble with pins battle. You must be the one to defeat that opponent to gain access to each hidden character, but be sure to push left-c or right-c on the character select mode...he or she may have other wrestlers hidden within them.
The different modes include King of the Ring (between 3-16 teams or single wrestlers who compete in a tournament to crown either a new king, or to decide a title), Pay Per View (you choose the venue, time, place, between 1-12 matches), single matches including three way dances, four way battles (just go to team battle, select 4 participants, and choose the rules), iron man matches, ladder matches (put either a briefcase of greenbacks or a championship above the ring, bring the ladder in, beat your foe with it, jump off the ladder onto them, then climb the ladder and grab your prize), the Smackdown Mall (buy new characters, venues, weapons, attire such as boots and clothing, special moves such as the new fireball and the old man flop, and even purchase new masks and face paint!), and the create a wrestler mode.
Create a wrester (CAW) is a game unto itself. I myself sit in front of my computer in search of wrestlers to print out, reproduce on my game, and then manipulate them as i decide his what his moves and hair styles should look like. You can do anything with a caw. You choose their taunts (how about a Hulkster flex, or a Blue Blazer airplane, RIP OWEN. There are many new moves to add to your new creations, such as special leg locks, special head submission holds, and even a bunch of new special moves.
During gameplay you can piledrive or DDT opponents through pool tables, a card table in the locker room, and announce tables. You can pick weapons up from the crowd and even toss them at your opponent. Heck, i've heard of people buying this game and not even bothering with the wrestlers already in the game, just making their own legions of actors, sports stars, fighters, or even presidents! My advice...Buy this game and join in the addiction!
