To say that my son is the only video game fanatic in this house would be somewhat of a lie. I, myself, love video games. So usually when I shop for games and accessories, I try to find something that we both can enjoy. Since we both adore Hot Wheels Turbo Racing and CTR (Crash Team Racing) games, I started shopping for a decent racing wheel that was simple to operate. What I found was the GT2 Racing Wheel by Pelican.
The GT2 Racing Wheel is a steering wheel used to play racing type games on the Sony Playstation system. There were many reasons why I made this purchase vs. other racing wheels I did see while doing shopping comparisons. I will break them down for simplicities sake.
The Brake and Accelerator
When I was looking to purchase a racing wheel, I noticed that almost all of them were a two-piece system. One part was your steering wheel and the second part was something you placed on the floor, which is where your accelerator and brake is. While this would be okay for me, I honestly believed that it would be too complex for my son to do. Therefore, I wanted something simpler. The GT2 Racing Wheel met that need. Instead of it being a two-piece system, it is one unit with accelerator and brake paddles located right behind the steering wheel. So instead of having to step on something, you can make your car move and stop by holding the paddles while you are driving.
Size
Unlike a lot of steering wheels I saw, the GT2 Racing Wheel is not overly large. In fact, I find the wheel compact. The steering wheel is approximately 8 inches across while the base size is approximately 9 inches long by 9 inches wide. It is large enough to feel like you are actually racing yet small enough not to take a lot of room when it comes to storing.
Design
The design of the GT2 Racing Wheel is attractive. The entire control is black with the exception of the buttons and the Pelican & GT2 logos. Instead of a complete circle for a steering wheel, it is of one. The steering wheel is designed much like the ones you see on arcade games.
Now, the base of the GT2 Racing Wheel is unique to me because of few features. The first one is that you can hold it on your lap because of its size and weight. If you dont want to hold it on your lap, you can place it on the table and it is still easy to control. If these two options dont meet your needs, then try this onethe base can suction itself to the edge of a flat table and be stationery to really give you that racing feel of being at the wheel.
The Feel of Racing
I know that a lot of people love the Dual Shock function that the newer Playstation systems have. Because of this feature, a lot of new games including the majority of racing games give your that extra feel of excitement by vibrating your controller while you are moving your car on the screen. However, when using some racing wheels, you lose this function because the majority of racing wheels do not have Dual Shock capability. This is not a problem with the GT2 Racing Wheel because it supports Dual Shock. So know, when you are racing, you can really feel like you are racing when you go around the curbs turning your wheel and feeling the wheel vibrate in your hands according to your movements. You cant get any more realistic than that unless you are actually driving a car!
The Cord
With the GT2 Racing Wheel you do not need to sit right directly in front of the console because the units cord is small. The GT2 Racing Wheel cord is approximately 92 inches from where it is attached at the base of the unit to where it plugs into the Playstation console. So you can sit back as far as 7 feet and not have to worry about accidentally unplugging the unit from the console.
Other Features
The GT2 Racing Wheel also has some other features that make it that much more a better racing wheel than other models on the market. On the steering wheel, there are red cushion grips on each side of the steering wheel to give you better traction when you are turning it from side to side.
Above the GT2 logo in the center of the steering wheel are an arch bank of lights that light up while you are driving and also by its color distinction let you know what mode you are in (digital or analog). As you accelerate, the lights go up. They start off at yellow and go all the way to redmeaning you are flooring it on the game.
Also on the wheel are your standard digital controls should you want to switch from analog controlling (using the steering wheel) to using the directional buttons. On the left side of the steering wheel on top are the up, down, left, and right directional buttons. On the right side, there are the triangle, , O, and X button that you see on your normal Playstation controller. In the middle of the steering wheel in a row are your L1, L2, R2, and R1 buttons. Below that in a column are the Mode button (which switches you between analog and digital controlling), the Start button, and the Select button. With these features, it is like getting two different controllers into one unit!
All right all you fellow racecar Gamers. If you are looking for an excellent steering wheel that is simple to use and convenient in size, then check out the GT2 Racing Wheel by Pelican. It has all the features of a standard controller, yet also is a steering wheel to make your racing game feel even more realistic. It is fairly inexpensive compared to the prices of some of the racing wheels on the market (I picked mine up on sale for $17.99), yet offers more features than most other racing wheels do. In racing, the GT2 Racing Wheel is the ultimate controlling deviceof course, this is just my Epinion
