The Pokemon Menace
Apr 05 '00
Pikachu's here... Pikachu's there...Pikachu's everywhere these days it seems. Pikachu is a cute little electric mouse, who lives in the pokemon world with all his little pokemon friends. This simple, harmeless video game is enjoyed by children and adults alike, the premise is easy to understand and even though the pokemon "fight" (battle) no one dies, they just faint till you as the trainer heal them. For advocates of non-violent games for kids this is perfect. When I 1st saw the game I thought it was similar to those little Tamagotchi things and bought it anyway to check it out. I was hooked from the minute I started playing.
I have watched the cartoon and the movie, and I feel that while they are entertaining, there is also some very good values taught. Friendship, loyalty, trust are a few that come right to mind. Ash and Pikachu have built their friendship throughout the entire series, teaching kids that perseverance, dedication, and honesty will win through any problem and that nothing is too tough to overcome with help from friends working together. A little syrupy, but the message is there.
I am lucky enough that my wallet budget will support my pokemon habit, I own quite a few of the toys and all the games released so far. Each and every one of them by themselves is enjoyable to play and challenges kids in different ways.
Fads come and go, but I have the feeling these little Pocket Monsters are going to be around for awhile.
