I can remember being fascinated with WW2 as a kid, it was the whole good vs. evil thing. "Patton" to "From Here To Eternity", I watched anything that was WW2 related. Then Robert Conrad hit the small screen with Baa Baa Black Sheep(later Black Sheep Squadron) and that was the beginning of the end. The bent wing Corsair was a beauty, and I loved to watch pappy and the boys send those T-6 Texans(Zeros) to meet their makers.
As a flight simmer, I wanted a pacific war sim on par with the other sims available today. When I heard Microsoft was doing one, I was thrilled.
So far, after a couple months of playing, I would rate it as a must buy for flight simmers, especially the WW2 fan. However, there are a few things about it that bother me. And i'll get the negatives out of the way now.
First of all, the campaign is the branching scripted type. This is only a negative if you are a fan of dynamic campaigns as I am.
Second, unless there is some new workaround I have missed, AI planes cannot land or takeoff from the carrier. This one just bugs the heck out of me.
Thirdly, the AI wingmen seem to be graduates of the same idiot academy that so many other sim wingmen are....often better to just do it yourself.
Also, I cant say that the included campaigns are all that hot, but they arent bad. And the manual is ok, good history lesson, but not to meaty on details about the sim itself. And there are key commands missing from the master list.
Now for the good stuff. Graphics are top notch, planes look combat/weather worn and the little things like landing gear suspension, folding wings and the fact that you can open and close the cockpit add to immersion.
The CFS1 European terrain is included, and addon planes from CFS1 and FS98/2000 are compatible. There are also some mods to allow you to fly the non-flyable planes...love that Dauntless.
This all bodes well for replayability, as the mission builder is fairly easy to use and can also create campaigns.
Im a fan of the F4F Wildcat, so thats where I spend most of my time. And I must say, those guys were top notch, 'cause the Zero seems to fly circles around me more often than not.
I have a PIII-600 with 128meg ram and it runs smooth with all options maxed or selected.
Multiplay is basically deathmatch type of thing, no coop.....another negative
