The Top 3 in our House

Feb 29 '00

Just before Christmas Pokemon fever was at an all time high. It's cooled down a few degrees, but it's still pretty popular. Last week, though, my daughter wore a new Pokemon sweater to school. When she got home, she informed me that everyone hates Pokemon now. The new favorite is Digimon. That's bad news considering my husband invested so much money ensuring she would get just about every card there is to own for Christmas. We still have tons of duplicates left if anyone wants any.

Although she rarely looks at her cards, she did get one she was missing-the Mew card-at the flea market for $5 this weekend. Her dad is as hooked as she is-what can I say?

She does have three favorite items she got for Christmas. She plays with them constantly. They are as follows:

1. Pokemon Pokedex-In case there is a parent out there who does not know what this is, it's a small electronic Pokemon dictionary. I've read epinions from parents trying to review this item saying it doesn't do much at all. Wrong. If you read the manual it comes with, it really does a lot. My daughter loves this thing. She can just punch in a number from the book because all 150 are listed numerically. It brings up the type, strength, height and weight, even the attack modes of that Pokemon. She can also just punch in the name instead for the same information. She can save them to her favorite places for future reference. She can sort them by type, or whatever characteristic she likes. It even has a calculator and a password protector. The pictures are not really good quality. They are in black and white and are a very crude computer generated quality. But, it's fine with her. We were lucky enough to get it for $17 at Sears even though they were going for three times that on e-bay before Christmas. She says she likes it because she can learn more about Pokemon and likes the way it beeps.

2. Pokemon Monopoly-It's much like the classic, but with Pokemon characters. You can choose Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, MewTwo, Blastoise, and Clefairy. There is Pokemon money. Instead of the usual real estate, you can buy Poke Marts and Poke Centers. There are different rules for rolling doubles. It has Professor Oak and Trainer Battle Cards instead of the usual ones. It gets complicated for kids. She has to play with an adult who understands the rules. She does enjoy it, though.

3. Her stuffed Pikachu-Pikachu is, in my opinion, one of the cutest Pokemon. He's bright yellow with black markings and has little pointed ears and rosy cheeks. Apparently he's a pretty sought after toy. Everywhere we go, people stop her and ask where she got it. I was carrying it in a restaurant the other day. A woman in a booth stopped me and asked about it. Then in the restroom, I was asked the same thing. The woman jokingly threatened to steal it. Both my daughter and her two year old brother love that toy.

As far as my personal thoughts on Pokemon-I think it's a harmless fad. I do think the parents are acting like they do with the Ty beanies and sort of taking it over. The flea markets and e-bay are full of grown men making a killing off Pokemon items. I'm not so sure they are going to be worth as much in the future as these collectors hope. If the fad continues to die out at the rate it is, they won't be worth much soon. I'm just glad my daughter is enjoying it for now.
