| nathantyree's Full Review: Atari Jaguar |
Atari was the company responsible for at home gaming. First there was Pong, then the Atari 2600, the first truly great game console system. For years Atari ruled the home gaming market. Then, somehow they were overtaken by Nintendo and Sega, and eventually Sony.
As a final attempt to regain market share Atari leaped into the future, escalating game evolution in the proccess by introducing the Jaguar. It was not only a CD based system, but it offered 64 bit graphics at a time when other systems were still stuck in a 16 bit world.
The Jaguar was a major innovation in the world of console games, and it should have changed the battlefield. But it didn't. Most people never even knew this console existed. Why? You may ask.
Simple: no software support. A complete lack of games made it an impossible option for most consumers. Why buy a great system with no games available when you could get a mediocre system with thousands of titles.
So the Jaguar died, despite being the best system on the market. In fact it is highly superior to the Nintendo 64, which is two steps beyond where Nintendo was when the Jag' was released.
I find it sad to see how such a great system could fail to survive the marketplace, and to see Atari become a footnote in history.
