| Zatoichi's Full Review: Battleground 1 - Bulge |
I have played this game and its original parent game "Battleground Ardennes" through every scenario on each side of the map and I LOVE it!
The game has a nice mix of military equipment available to both sides. The turn sequence, map selection, and weather effects are accurate and give a good representation of the Battle of the Bulge. The balance of forces vary from one scenario to another, so both American and German players have a range of units and capabilities; its not always the lonely human player beating back a tide of computer units.
Combined arms tactics are emphasized in the flow of the game; there is no single unit that is "Queen of Battle" and can just smash everything in its path. One of the fun challenges of the game its to find the weaknesses of powerful units like the King Tiger or Panther tank and defeat them
This title has more than 40 historical and hypothetical scenarios. There is a tutorial to help you get started. A scenario editor / builder is also included.
I am very experienced wargamer with more than 20 years experience and find this game very entertaining. It has a high degree of replayability, tolerable computer intelligence, and allows for hot seat or PBM play. The computer player doesn't seem to cheat much when playing a live opponent.
This is a game that was good in its day and is still worth considering, especially at the bargain bin price. I can only complain that because this is an older title, you will have trouble finding it in stores. Keep an eye on the budget bin! I have found the game bundled with other older games in resale boxes for $5-7.
