Pros: Unlimitted amount of gameplay, ability to make plug-ins, smooth animation, the list goes on...
Cons: If you're running an old mac, well, good luck.

| moofive's Full Review: Escape Velocity Override |
Escape Velocity Override is definitely one of the best games (shareware and commercial) out on any platform. Combining a lot of action and strategy, Ambrosia has come out with yet another hit.
THE GOOD: There are several particular parts to cover here. The most important is the "plug-in." Plug-ins (for those who don’t know) are sort of like system extensions, only for a specific program. EVO supports plug-ins, and that is the best part. Plug-ins allow you to customize the game. Actually, you can customize it to the point where it’s a different game. What does that mean to the potential player? Well, if you don’t like/got bored of the default scenario, get online, and find yourself a new one.
Another important thing to point out is the gameplay. It’s smooth and responsive, so you don’t have to wait to see if you held down the throttle too long. Even with the screen flooded by bullets, torpedoes and ships, the game still manages to keep a good level of actual fluid movement (not that choppy stuff, like you get when you play Baldur’s Gate).
THE NOT AS GOOD: Well, if you’re not running a PowerPC you probably can’t play it at all, and only those with a stout 603 should try anyway. For all those aspiring plug-in makers, I have bad news. It’s not the easiest thing on earth. In fact it’s very hard, and it requires a lot of reading and knowledge of ResEdit. There are a few shareware and freeware editors out there, though, I just don’t know if they’re any good.
The actual game is very similar to it’s predecessor, Escape Velocity. It seems like a big upgrade (EV 2.0). Either way, it’s worth buying for the giant collection of plug-ins alone.
It has action, it has strategy, and it has a small price tag (only $25). Even if it’s not your favorite game, it’s better then blowing $50+ only some half-decent commercial game. All in all, I’d buy it. I did, actually, and it’s one of my best purchases.
