Note: You may be wondering what makes S-Video so good. The reason is that in S-Video, as in component, RGB, and VGA signals, the video signal is split into two components. One, called chroma, says how the colors are layed out. The other one, called luma, lays out the levels of brightness for the screen. The result is that both signals can carry more detail, as you're not trying to stuff color and brightness into one signal.
Well, the weekend before the launch of the PS2, I went to the store to pick up some of the stuff that I had preordered for it. Once I got there, I realized that even though using the prepackaged AV cable would be fine for my TV, if I wanted to use my computer's S-Video in (courtesy of my Voodoo3 3500 video card), I was going to need an S-Video cable. So I picked up this cable for about $15, and took it home.
That Friday, once SW Edison got the transformer that blew fixed, I picked up my PS2, and hooked it up to my computer. The S-Video output allows for crisp graphics that are very detailed. The ultimate test of this was when I brought it to the weekly meeting for the USC Pacific Anime club. I got the opportunity to hook it up to the AV system in one of the classrooms there, with my trusty S-Video cable. And with the S-Video feed, my PS2 games were STUNNING on the big-screen monitor that I was using.
But enough of my pseudo-arcade experience, and back to the cable. Of course, Sony makes one of their own. But the Interact cable is of solid quality, and is about $5 cheaper than the Sony one. Needless to say, the choice is clear: if you can't get component or VGA, but can use S-Video, this cable is a good component at a good price.
