| gjacks's Full Review: Atari 2600 |
I remember when I was about 7 years old wanting an Atari 2600 more than anything else in the world.
Well, my sister and I had a plan on how to get one. No, we weren't going to go to Wal-Mart and steal one. Our grandfather grew strawberries for a living. Every summer my sister and I would pick a couple of crates and bring them home and sell them to people in our church or people my parents worked with. This was a great way for us to make some spending money each summer.
This particular summer we had to pick and sell enough to make around $100 to buy an Atari 2600. Well, we made it and we finally got our Atari. I had fun with it for the next 10 years or more. I would even hook it up every once in a while just to play the old games even when I had my new, state of the art, Commodore 64 computer.
Anyway, the Atari 2600 was the game system that started it all. Yes, there were a few before this one, but this system is the one that became a household item all across America.
The Atari 2600 had some of the best games I have ever played. Maybe the graphics weren't as good as the new computer games, but for my taste, I still think the games were more fun. I had over 20 different games for my Atari. We would always get one or two games each year for Christmas and I would get one for my birthday every year. Over the years, we compiled quite a collection of games and I loved them all.
Some of my favorites included Real Sorts Baseball and Football, Space Invaders, Mrs. Pacman, Keystone Kapers, Basketball (yep, the original one with really bad graphics), and Breakout.
At that time, there was no where else that you could get this type of entertainment other than going to the local arcade. If you went to the arcade, you had to keep pumping the quarters in the machines. At home, you could play for hours on end and it was already paid for. I think this was what really started the computer game generation. Many of the computer game junkies like me got started on the Atari 2600.
One of the best things about this game system was the longevity of it. The system I owned is still in use today almost 20 years later. I recently gave it and all of my games to a friend of mine. He had been looking for one for quite a while and couldn't find one in good condition just to have for the memories. I have actually been over to his house a few times and played it. Everything still works and the games are just as fun as they ever were.
If you are child of the late 70s or early 80s and remember the Atari 2600, you are very similar to me. This was the original game system and, in my epinion, the greatest...especially with the technology that was available.
