This is a review for the Sony S-Video cable. After trying several times to no avail, to get Epinions to add the correct category I just wrote it here. That said....
When I originally bought this cable, it was scarce, I had a hard time finding it anywhere, and finally, Best Buy had one for $30. After purchasing, I plugged it into my television (you need to have a S-Video port on your tv), and from the initial boot-up, I could notice how clear the picture was.
An S-Video connection splits the video signal into separate channels for chroma (color) and luminescence (brightness), and this is what makes the picture looks so much better, there is no interference between the two. It almost looks as good as a computer monitor, considering the Playstation's lower resolution, that's actually a good comparison. The resolution is crisper, and you get to see the games like the developers meant them to look, short of using component (RGB) video.
2 dimensional games look outstanding through this cable, which makes sense, considering that they utilize pixels more so than 3 dimensional games. This was especially noticeable when I played Street Fighter Alpha 3, as it looked almost as good as the arcade cabinet. The text and the characters were both crystal clear with no pixel bleed-over (pixels whose color run onto each others). 3d games such as Medal Of Honor look outstanding as well, giving crisp edges, but 2d games contain more pixels that are more apt to bleed into each other, therefore, those are the games which you will see the greatest improvement with this cable. If your favorite games contains a lot of text, such as "Worms Armageddon," then this is almost a must buy for you, as the S-Video cable produces great text clarity from the Playstation. 3d games will look much better as well, but blocky textures will be emphasized, you can see them more clearly, and you will also notice the jaggies (diagonal lines that look like stairs instead of straight lines), but this is not the fault of the cable, it's just the shortcomings of the Playstation showing, don't let that deter you from buying the cable though. In short, this is a definite buy if your tv can support it.
