BLAME CANADA !!!
by dave_huber | Jan 30 '00
The public should look at games in the same light as movies and use the ratings to determine appropriateness. Parents, check out www.esrb.com and understand their meanings.

Your attitude reinforces the ideas that most people want to get rid of. (Reply to this comment)

"Kill our fellow human beings"? There is no death of any human being in any way, shape or form associated with video games today. You're competitors, playing a game. If you "die", you "come back to life" in a matter of seconds, with no medical attention.

I didn't hear anyone raising a ruckus over laser tag when that came out. You had actual people running around...shooting other actual people with guns. This is one abstraction barrier closer to real life, than video games can go. Paintball goes one step further, there's even pain involved. I don't remember uptight citizens of "this country" getting their knickers in a knot and complaining about kids killing other kids and trying to get high scores.

If you're praying that scientists looking into the invalid assumption that these "abhorrent" video games will damage whoever plays them, don't hold your breath. The generations of Americans before me went to actual wars...they saw actual killings, and actually killed others. Why don't we complain about them being the most violent generation of all time? Huh? What's the answer? I'm waiting...oh wait, I forgot...there is no answer, it's because your arguments are invalid and unfounded...that's right.

There is a major difference, however; in a game, one does not kill "other human beings". Nothing actually dies; reload the level and everyone's back. Shoot a friend in an online game and a few seconds later, he's back. This might lead some people to believe that you could kill someone and that they would come back, but that person would have to be incredibly unstable to believe such a thing. Kids are smarter than the people blaming entertainment give them credit for; they know the difference between real life and games. Those that don't may be helped along the road to murder by a game, but it's the kid who takes the final step over the edge. Besides, if a child can not tell the difference between Quake and real life, they have some problems that should have been solved by their parents long before they play violent games.

I must say that (Reply to this comment)

I find these video games abhorrent, and I am sure given time, the experts who are as we speak, undoubtedly studying this in earnest, will indeed find them to be extremely detrimental to any individual who plays them.

However I cannot find fault with your opinion either. You eloquently stated your position, backing it up with solid facts.

And it is a fact that the rating system is there for a reason, and parents must be educated about the system, at http://www.mediaandthefamily.com/effect.html you will find a very good article which covers guidelines for parents and explains the ratings system.

I admire the fact that you have brought up your rights as a citizen of this country, those rights are solemn as well as sacred.

But please allow me to say once again as i did in a comment I made on another young man's opinion regarding this issue. I do not see these video games as a scapegoat, I am just gravely saddened that we as a nation feel the need to be entertained by participating in an activity where we will take pleasure in deciding how to kill our fellow human beings and worry about how many points we score in doing so.
