| zfox's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 for Nintendo 64 |
I rarely impulsively buy games without renting them first, but as soon as I tried Tony Hawk for n64 in Circuit City, I had to have it. The game was fun and easy to learn. Within minutes, I was pulling off tricks that even Tony Hawk couldn't do in real life. The game's career mode is great, too. In that, you choose one skater and control him throughout his career. As you beat more and more levels, your skater improves and you are invited to contests. By beating levels and winning contests, you unlock more and more levels.
All of these levels are well thought out and designed, with different ramps, rails, and objects to do tricks on. Some levels are out in the street, while others are inside skate parks. In one level, you can skate on the roof of a school, inside the school gym (accesible through a skylight), outside around the school, and in the drained pools.
The graphics are done well, too. The skaters, boards, and levels are all done well, even better than they were in the Playstation version.
The game features great sound effects and original music. Since the n64 cartridge doesn't have as much storage capacity as the Playstation CD, all of the songs had to be shortened to one minute loops, which can be annoying sometimes. What music the game did have was good, though.
The game offers a few multiplayer modes - Horse, Graffitti, and Free Skate. In Horse, the players take turns doing tricks. Each player has to land a better trick than what the last player did. If they don't, they get a letter. Once they get all the letters in whatever word you are playing to, the game displays this message: "You are a -insert word here-" I leave it to your imagination to think of the funny possiblities of this. In Graffitti, players 'claim' objects by doings tricks on them. The player with the most after a certain amount of time wins. In free skate, whoever gets the most points in 2 minutes wins. These different competitions were enough to keep me and a friend entertained for hours and hours.
This brings me to the only problem with Tony Hawk: After a week or so, you can completely master the game. After that, its only fun when you play with a friend. If you're looking for a good multiplayer game, however, I strongly recommend it.
