| Gecko555's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII for PlayStation 1 |
First off, please dont track me down and kill me for this review...
Anyway, I am a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, having completed or almost completed FF 1, 4,5,6,7,8 (duh...or else i wouldnt be reviewing it), FFT (GREAT game!), and I am currently playing 9. Because I am such a fan, It really pains me to say that this game is really not good and does not live up to the FF name.
The game does have good graphics, great FMV's, the tried and true FF Active Time Battle system, and some entertaining bits, but the cons unfortunately outweigh the perks. THe major problems of this game are the plot (maybe I didn't get far enough, but from what I experienced, it was far inferior to FF7's, involving our heroes who are elite combat units clashing with an "evil" sorceress who is being controlled by the witch Ultimecia, while throwing in a romance story on the side). It really is not all that captivating, and I was disappointed. Another flaw is the new Junction system, where you allocate magic to statistics to make your character stronger. It seems like a good idea, but it just results in an annoying amount of micromanaging (especially when you switch characters in your party and you want to transfer junctioned spells from one character to another). Also, the main character, Squall Leonheart, is an insensitive jerk (kind of like Cloud at the beginning of FF7, but magnified 10,000 times) who doesn't seem to really change throughut the game (unlike Cloud). This makes it really hard to care about what happens to him during the game and makes the game less fun overall. Also, a minor personal gripe of mine is that they took away MP! Wah! I like MP!
Overall, I would not recommend this game to most people, and I would even recommend hardcore fans of the series to try before you buy, because even they might not like it (like me). I am really disappointed with Square on this one. (But I forgive you Square, because of all your past masterpieces and because of FF9, which makes FF fun again!)
