False accusations of video games causing violence...

Mar 24 '00

I have heard how many people say that when children are violent, they are copying their favorite video game or the TV show that was on last night, or the movie that they saw last week. The blame does not belong here. Violence does not happen because of games; it occurs only when parents do not take responsibility for their children.

Many video games today are violent in nature, and they seem to be the more popular games. However, this is not the cause of violence. Children would not have violent tendencies if their parents would do something about it. In some incidences, children do simulate a game when they are being violent, however, they wouldn't be violent in the first place if their parents had some kind of control.

Violence can be attributed to games on occasion, but it is not the number 1 source of it. Violence can almost always be attributed to some kind of bad behavior, or neglect, or abuse, or something of that nature. 9 times out of 10, games will not be the cause of the violence.

I think it's about time that we stop putting the blame on the innocent and we start taking responsibility for our kids. We have to teach them what is right and what is wrong, and we have to try to suppress their anger. If us, as parents, would exercise better responsibility for our children, we could prevent their violent actions before they happen.
