Pros: Solid Game, Lots of factual information. A very 'educational' addition to the R6 series.
Cons: Not much there for simple gaming enthusiasts.

| Archimedes's Full Review: Rainbow Six: Covert Ops |
To call Rainbow Six: Covert Ops a sequel in the Rainbow Six franchise would be a kind of exaggeration. The only thing that any fan of the series needs to know about this title is that it has some additional gameplay for your Rainbow Six library, mostly in the form of new maps. But the bulk of it is only going to be of interest to people who are seriously interested in the actual psychological and facts surrounding counter-terrorism. Don't get me wrong; It's very interesting, and a hardcore fan of the series may enjoy the documentation this game provides. But on the whole, it's nothing all that new, and Red Storm isn't pretending otherwise.
For those of you who may be new to the series, though, I'll outline the general points and features of the Rainbow Six line of games briefly.
Gameplay: The focus of Rainbow Six is on realism, teamplay, and strategy in general, making it something of a polar opposite to usual First Person Shooter games. Where the focus on a Quake sort of game is running around alone at top speed, blazing your guns at everyone in sight, and picking up as many weapons as you can hold, Rainbow Six has you sneaking around buildings with a group of teammates (Computer-controlled or, if you play multiplayer, Human-controlled), holding a maximum of two projectile with strictly limited ammunition, and trying to map out a careful way to kill enemies before they kill you. In a lot of instances you'll be dead the moment the enemy manages to fire on you, a severity of gameplay which will probably be alien to anyone who has never played this game before. It's very fun, but not in the way most First-Person Shooters are designed to be so.
Graphics: They're inferior to what you may be used to if you've played cutting-edge FPS games like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3. No licensed engine from ID or Epic Megagames here; The graphics are there simply to get the job done, and they manage to do that job properly despite their being relatively plain.
Sounds: These are done to great effect, mostly because the game manages to impose a very serious mood on the player during the game. Hearing voices, doors, or particularly gunshots will be certain to spark a small adrenaline rush when you're crouched down behind a table, trying to reload your gun without being spotted. Much like the graphics, nothing is very spectacular here: The audio simply gets the job done without being stellar in any respect.
Multiplay: The multiplayer code is relatively stable, and so long as you have a decent connection to the internet you should be able to enjoy a match with your friends without much of a hassle. Be warned, though; A laggy connection has ways of crippling your gameplay at the absolute worst times, usually when an enemy is about to open fire on you. Even a half-second pause in those cases will end up with your character dead on the ground, cut off from playing the game, or even talking to characters who aren't dead as well.
In the end: If you're very 'into' documentaries and information on real-life counter-terrorism and combat strategy, this game provides information that you should find enjoyable. If you're new to the Rainbow Six line of games and are interested in playing, this is as good of a game as any to start you out. But if you have previous Rainbow Six games and aren't that interested in pure factual information, there's not much here for you.
