Confessions of a mass murderer by NetDanzr | Nov 27 '00 Yesterday, I have watched a document on the Discovery channel, called “People out of control”. This document, among other things, blamed computer games for the real-life violence. I looked deep inside of me and realized a shocking truth – I am a...Return to opinion

Statistically speaking.... (Reply to this comment)

... it's been my experience that playing violent video games and watching violent movies leads to becoming professionals earning over 70k/yr. Heh.
But then... life is not over yet so someday perhaps I and my cronies may decide to climb that proverbial clock tower after all.. could happen!
My target would likely be shrinks that preofess this stuff causes violence.. grin.

Well argued opinion (Reply to this comment)

It's amazing how parents will blame video games for their kid's violence problems while letting them watch films such as Pulp Fiction, where the fantasy/reality line is far harder for children to understand than in computer games.
I just think the problem is society has become far too tolerant of realistic violence. Look at games such as Grand Theft Auto and Driver. In Grand Theft Auto you get extra points for running over minority groups such as the Hare-Krishnas; in Driver, it's impossible to run over anyone at all...

Coming from a different country as well, I can't even understand how kids can get so violent. In Slovakia, teen violence is on much lower levels than in the US - actually, I've never seen as much as a fight through my whole high school, while the stories I've heard from my friends, who attended a US high schools are small horror stories...

Coming from a ... (Reply to this comment)

different country, I always wonder that is it possible for kids to get so influenced? Particulalry teenage kids? In India movies are being blamed for the violence, as video games are not so popular.
But I guess sitting in front of a computer and playing games is a very un productive past time. It should be discouraged.

You are right, even though I'd underline the "they aid in dumbing..." part. I'd like to point out that video games are not responsible for any deaths directly; I don't know of a case when somebody killed according to a computer game. Games may push a person closer towards the edge (a better analogy would be that games can bring the edge closer towards the person), but that person has to make the ultimate step over the edge that divides ordinary people and killers.

I'm curious... (Reply to this comment)

...about what exactly censorship groups and other branches of government are worried about. While allowing the realization of the vast numbers of kills that you have accumulated seep into my brain, an epiphany hit me like ten-thousand elven arrows (okay, maybe it was just a thought). Like you said in the previous comment, it is amazing that computer/video games have not been proven responsible for more accounts of violence from teens (and perhaps even adults). Not only do these games portray "death as something temporary can make it easier for kids to decide to kill", they also aid in numbing the emotional impact caused by death. So these government groups should be counting their blessings, instead.

Thet's what the document said. I personally don't believe it, but as I have to education in the fielf of psychology, I'd have a very hard time to argue with that argument. However, you're right, and I should've written it in a bit weaker tone - that the fact that computer games portrait death as something temporary can make it easier for kids to decide to kill.
