Pros: Has DVD player, well known, powerful machine.

Everyone is asking, “Should I buy a Playstation 2?” This simple fact of the matter is that it depends on you. You need to ask yourself a couple questions first.
1. Can I afford it?
Most people have already asked themselves this before they purchase a $300.00 item. If you are short on cash and just want to be the cool kid on the block then I would not suggest it. Reason being, you not only will have to dish out $300.00 for the system you also have to dish out another $35.00 for the 8Meg memory card. Then you will either need to rent the games or buy them. This is the very least amount you would spend. There are many other extras that the PS2 does not come with so keep this in mind also. Another good suggestion is to find a place that rents them out. This way you know for sure what you think of the PS2 and if it’s worthy of your time and money.
2. Are there any games out for the PS2 that I like?
When gaming systems first come out they usually release about 10 or so games. They always make sure to release at least 1 that will help sell the system. The PS2 is no exception. The release of SSX (a snowboarding game) was what they used to push the system. Although this is a popular game and is fun to play, it is only 1 game. There will be allot more games released in the next year so at this point it might be wise just to wait for more titles to show up on the shelves that catch your eye. Doing this will not only affirm your decision to get a PS2, but the PS2 will also be readily available. The price of the unit may even drop by that time.
3. Am I getting it because it dubs as a DVD player?
This is one reason you do not want to get the PS2, and let me tell you why. Sure it is true the loading time of the movies take longer and the interface between you and the screen isn’t as easy as a stand alone DVD player. There is however a much larger picture you need to look at here. The DVD player only plays a certain type of DVD. So each time you go to get a movie you have to scan it. Right now you should be able to play most if not all of the DVD movies you purchase. However a word of caution. DVD technology changes allot and this may result in not being able to play movies that come out in the future. I know this because I had a stand alone DVD player and 6 months later I had to buy a new one because the recording technology was changed so I could not play newer movies. Besides you can buy a good stand alone DVD player for $250.00 and some lower end DVD players for even less.
4. What does the future look like for the PS2?
This is the most important question you have to ask yourself. True the game programmers are still trying to utilize the PS2’s full potential, however the programming process is very hard. The best games right now only utilize about 50% of it’s capabilities which is good news to those of you who really want a PS2. Keep in mind though there is a little thing called the XBOX that Microsoft is working on and if Bill Gates is reporting the truth about the system it will make all other systems obsolete. I have seen graphic demonstrations of the XBOX and it is unreal. It’s basically a 700Mhz computer put into a box shaped like an X with a custom designed graphics engine. Now I’m not saying this will be any better that the PS2 but it has the potential of dominating the market assuming the project isn’t canceled.
5. Should I buy a Dreamcast (DC) instead of a PS2?
True the DC is allot cheaper and does have many games you can play. Just keep in mind it has taken the DC programmers this long to utilize the capabilities of the DC. That’s why allot of people say the graphics on the DC are better than the PS2. That may be true now but in about 6 months I feel opinions will change due to a more comprehensive understanding of the PS2 programming capabilities. I own both and I’m playing my PS2 more than my DC. I think the main reason is because I can play Playstation games on the PS2.
In conclusion I would just like to say that the ultimate decision is up to you. If you take all the advice above and answered the questions honestly, I think you will be able to make a wise decision based on your own feelings. I’m not saying not to buy one after all I do own one myself. I did however, have to ask myself all of the above questions before I bought one. So whatever your decision happy playing and remember if it ain’t fun it ain’t worth your time.
