Use Some Common Sense Here...
Jul 25 '00
OK, some people take things way too far, and this is one of those topics. First of all, I play a LOT of video games, and I have only killed three people in my life, so I am not like a serial killer or anything. (It's a joke, relax!)
Here's my personal view on it. My mother was extremely over protective about this when I was a kid (she thought Super Mario Bros was violent cause you jump on the turtles' heads!), but there is a lot to be said about censoring what your young children play. My own personal opinion is that a child does not need extremely violent games to put ideas in their heads, because they get enough of that from other sources. I mean come on, I know that I play games that I think are really cool, but I just imagine what some kid's mother would think if she walked in the room and saw him playing it!
I have the same view on video games as I do on movies...they do not cause kids to perform violent acts, but if they already have a violent nature, playing these games or watching it in movies will only expand these tendencies. So I believe that it is an extremely good idea to keep your kids away from violent video games until they are old enough to realize the difference between real life and make believe. How old should they be? That all depends on the child, of course, but from what I can tell from my niece (who is a few years older than my son) 13 or 14 seems to be a good age to start slacking off on my control of what games they play. By that point, if you have not given them a strong enough upbringing to know that video games are not real, then they are going to have issues whether you try to control them or not!
