Tomb Raider has done a lot of things since it was released back in 1996 (man it was that long ago?). With others like it, it has helped define a new generation of games that don't have to be cutesy to be good.*
It has brought the 3D adventure the proper respect it deserves. Instead of just being considered not good enough to be a first person shooter, these games are about more than just blasting everything you see.
And that's where Tomb Raider hits the high points. It's more than just a mindless shooter. You have to think, and solve puzzles. The challenge level is way up there, and who doesn't love a good challenge? The graphics are incredible, and even now, 4 years, they've held up very well. 4 years in the video game is ancient history. The play control is smooth, regardless of whether you use a joystick, gamepad, or the keyboard.
So give Tomb Raider a go, and see what a classic game is supposed to look like.
* And please don't take this to mean I'm one of those bloodthirsty game players. I love the Mario games, and Sonic, and Donkey Kong. But really, all of these "mascot" games are making me sick.
