| netcigar's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
The Sony Playstation 2 is hands down this year's best gaming system. Until next year when more competition arrives, you simply will have trouble finding better graphics, gameplay or fun built into a square plastic three hundred dollar box.
There are a lot of stats I could throw at you...128 bit graphics engine, Dolby Digital DVD playback, etc., but what would that tell you? Would that answer your question: if (a big if) I can find one of these things, is it worth three hundred smackers? The answer for me: YES.
It is inevitable to talk about the PS2 (as it is goes by), without comparing it to the only other competition right now, the Dreamcast by Sega. This is not a Dreamcast review, but lets spend a moment on this topic. Dreamcast is last year's box. It is last year's technology. If you want last year's hottest box, (and the cheaper price), get the Dreamcast. You'll have fun with last year's games.
PS2 is this year's box. With DVD movie playability, even if the game system becomes outdated (give it a couple years and it will), you still have a decent DVD player. It has DTS Dolby Digital playback, so it will match any surround system you put it with, and give you excellent home theater excitement.
Twenty eight games have already been released for the PS2, with more due on the way. Here's a key point: YES, almost all of the games from the original Playstation will work on it. So far, I've seen a list of less than ten games out of several hundred that won't. Your library of games is huge whether you owned the original or it's new heir.
As with any system, be careful of some of these initial release games, by the way. (You didn't think I'd be all positive did you?) Some of the games are better than others, and some just don't make the cut. In truth, it will probably be six months before game developers actually make games that can truly take advantage of the PS2's amazing features. My advice: read the reviews of any game you are thinking of buying. Most of them are pretty close to the truth, and you'll know if your game is worth buying.
I've had mine about two weeks now, and it is truly a great gaming system. The only true criticism I have is that it only comes equipped with two gaming ports, (meaning that for four players you will need an adapter sold separately), the accessories and games are not cheap, and finally I'm not sold on the design of the box.
Bottom line: if you want the best gaming system out right now, get the PS2. If your on a budget, wait six months till more games are released, or get an older system to tide you over.
