RollerCoaster Tycoon gets my vote for best simulation game of '99. This one's a blast :)
First, the basics. RollerCoaster Tycoon is a building game. You are the owner of an amusement park, and your job is to develop it to some visitor or park value goal. Each scenario has a different qualification and setup. Many of them come with pre-built rides with which you can build around, improve, or totally destroy as suits your building style. The tools for developing roller coasters enable you to do just about anything you can imagine with one. The game provides everything from old fashioned wooden coasters to suspended steel thrillers. The rides are definitely the center of the game, but attractions, research and staff play a big part in making your guests happy too.
My favorite aspect of RollerCoaster Tycoon is how flexible it is. You can make a park full of knock-your-socks-off thrill rides, or one to please the kiddie crowd, and it's still going to get plenty of visitors.
You can also save your favorite roller coasters to use again in other parks or trade with friends. The website is a big help there by providing a ride exchange area to swap rides with thousands of coaster builders everywhere.
The only thing I have been dissatisfied with is how fast the scenarios are over. Each scenario lasts about 3 or 4 game years, or approximately 4 hours. After that, you can still develop your park, but all research stops so you don't get any new rides or attractions. So, the amount of game play I got out of each scenario was essentially limited to how long it lasted. Granted there are many scenarios in the original, and another huge set in the expansion pack, but I felt like some of my parks were not developed to their fullest potential.
I recommend RollerCoaster Tycoon for anyone who likes sim building and management games. It's a great building game, wrapped up with a good dose of complexity and enjoyment.
