| 311Bud's Full Review: Nintendo NES |
Wow, who would have ever thought that we would see the classic 8-bit Nintendo on Epinions. I mean really, is there anyone who is actually thinking, "hmmm, now what do I buy? Should I go with this brand new Dreamcast, with its 3-d realism, or should I go with this 15 year old Nintendo, that would make a nice large paperweight. If you are actually asking that question, then this review is not for you. I am not planning on dissing the 8 bit processor or the horrible graphics. No, instead I am going to touch on the intangibles of the NES, the NES that I grew up with.
I think I got my NES in 1987. I was 7 at the time...and we paid a pretty penny for that thing. I know it was over 100, and it came with two (not one, two) controllers and that classic two pack of games, Super Mario brothers and Duck Hunt. Come to think of it, it came with a zapper too! That never happens these days!
The controls were very easy to master. B, A, Start, Select, and the D-pad. It did not get any easier than that, and it never will be. Somehow, with those few controls, we handled everything we needed to. We had no need for 20 buttons back in the day. The only downside was that the controllers were not exactly ergonomic. But I didn't have huge problems with it...
Then, of course, we moved on. Nintendos only had a certain life span before they, well, died. Fun games turned into black screens. So we upgraded with either the SNES or the Genesis. Either way, we never looked back.
Until today. Or until six months ago I should say. That was when the NES had its renaissance in my life. One person in our dorm last year discovered the marvel known as Emulators. These are computer programs that work just like a home gaming system. They are illegal, but if you have read my napsta review, you know I am not a stickler for copyright law. Anyway, they have them for all systems, but by far the NES is the most popular. If you play your cards right, you can have an Emulator installed along with over 100 full games in one hour. Yes, the files are that small. If you want to know where you go to do this, just email me. I don't think this is the topic to talk about it on. Oh, what the heck. It will help you out in the long run, and it will make you so happy you will WOT me.
HOW TO GET NES ON YOUR COMPUTER
This can be difficult. You see, the webpages that offer the emulators and the games, called ROMs, are often scams. They, more often than not, lead you into a sea of ads and pop up browsers. So be wary of that. I suggest you start at this website for relatively few popups:
www.vimm.net
As for the emulator you want to download, there are different ones that vary in effectiveness. The two most popular are Nesten and NesTicle. I give the easy nod to Nesten, because it works in windows 98 and rarely freezes, none of which can be said about nesTicle.
And that's all you need. Give me a second to come back from my all-too-long tangent.
Anyway, we all downloaded these things, and it was just amazing to me to watch the phenomenon that was going on in Plunkett Hall. We all have Nintendo 64s, Playstations, and 800 MHZ computers that play the most state of the art games. But where could you find everyone? In front of a game of Punch-Out or Baseball Simulator 1.000 (my favorite). It was amazing. After a decade long hiatus, the NES returned and it turned out it was more fun than anything produced in the 90s. Was it the sound or graphics? No, it was the pure captivation of the games. It is incredible what those designers could do back in the day with so little to work with. If only today's designers were that good...
Anyway, I'm going to take this little space right here to highlight a few games that you might need to check out.
BASEBALL SIMULATOR 1.000
This is the ultimate baseball game for the NES. And hardly anyone knows about it. It is way ahead of its time. It plays kinda like RBI Baseball 1, but it is so much more. It has full stat tracking for an entire season! And get this, you can name everyone on your team! We made everyone in the dorm a player, and started a 30 game season when finals were started! People would stay for their at bat instead of going to take their tests. The game also has an ultra league, where all the players have insane abilities. I won't tell you exactly what they are, but try beaning a batter with a fireball!
BLADES OF STEEL
Hockey gets no better than....Blades of Steel. Once you learn to control your goalie there is no stopping you. Except for in the fights...
DUCK TALES
Believe it or not, this game is really fun. I think it has the most perfect learning curve on all of gaming for the last 20 years. Try it!
Other than that, just browse ROM pages to see what you might enjoy! And remember that there will never be another gaming system in the next 20 years that will prove as playable as the NES!
