| t13monkeys's Full Review: Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 For Windows |
To be honest, I didn't expect this game to be so good. I saw a promo video of it on a preview cd that I got, which did not do it justice and I was discouraged. However when I got the game, I discovered it was just freaking amazing. These graphics beat out anything out there, I've played Deus Ex, and I can say there are probably twice as much polygon count and smoothness in this game.
What also surprised me was a purely fleshed out plot. The game sounded like a, lets go out and kill monsters Doom-like thing, but it totally comes complete with real-time 3d cut scenes, that look unbelievable and really develop the characters around you and your role as protector. Julie also looks just freaking unbelievable, you'll be saying Lara Croft who after you play this game. She's totally a smooth character, you can see the strands of her hair pretty clearly (although it is a bump/texture map) it still looks amazing. Added to that, this game has bosses, what most run and gun games lack. Each level ends with a boss of some type which you have to outwit in some way. They are huge and very cool looking as well as challenging to play.
Okay down to technical aspects, because I know a lot of people hate the way Deus Ex totally screwed up their computers, crashing often and clipping. Heavy Metal FAKK did clip on my Athlon 700, 128 RAM, 3D Prophet GeForce 256 card, but only on certain segments with really high polygon count. The problem occurred only once every now and then, oddly enough sometimes I could play the game totally smooth even in the town without any skipping. So it's not much to worry about. Unlike Deus Ex, you won't encounter any your computer has died stuff, which has really annoyed the heck out of me (but I still love the game). So overall, don't worry about Heavy Metal 2 FAKK crashing on you and do run on some high res if possible. The higher, the cooler it looks. I set mine on 32 bit texture, highest character detailing and 1080 x 1280 I believe.
The game plays like Quake, as it is based on the same engine. It however utilizes projectile weapons less and swords more. If you've played Tenchu Stealth Assasins you'll get a immediate feel for the hacking, slashing moves.
Overall, this game is just probably one of the most unexpected best games out there. Don't let it up just because of the infamous Heavy Metal brand, or the strange environment. Once you get into it and see the graphics, you'll want to play. And of course we want to see a sequel so do Purchase the game, no rippin it off your friends. It's worth every bit of it.
P.S. This game is totally kid-safe, you won't see any sex/nudity that is found in the Heavy Metal magazine. The only thing is Julie has a couple of skimpy costumes in the game, and her breasts are a bit ...exaggerated. For the most part, teens can play this game, but of course i wouldn't recommend letting your little 10 year old brother play.
