| hope73's Full Review: Shadow Gate for Nintendo 64 |
While not so patiently awaiting something remotely resembling a role
playing game being released for the Nintendo 64, I was ecstatic when Shadowgate 64 appeared in stores. I thought back to the days of my childhood, staying up all hours of the night playing the original Shadowgate for the NES. So, I purchased the game without hesitation. I
really wish I would have rented it first. While Shadowgate 64 is not a
terrible game, it could be so much more. The horrible "fog effect" that
plagues so many N64 games is quite evident here, at times obscuring objects so badly that you have to backtrack to retrieve them later in the game. The graphics are dull and lifeless. There is no fear factor in Shadowgate 64 as was in the original. While the puzzles and riddles are usually somewhat challenging, it's simply not enough to make this a must have game. The worst aspect is that the entire game can be conquered within a matter of days making the replay value nonexistant. Shadowgate 64 is worth a weekend rental, but not a purchase. I recommend picking up the recently released Shadowgate Classic for the Game Boy Color, a remake of the original Shadowgate for the NES.
