| lemonkey's Full Review: Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 For Windows |
Being a big fan of Heavy Metal magazine and of the movies, buying this game was a no-brainer. However, I am always weary of games based on a movie/product license (see any Star Trek game).
After playing this game for 5 minutes, all my worries were gone. Julie's character animations, the architecture of the surrounding building, the incidental music and audio, and the NPC character interactions were up to par with any game out on the market today. They really did a good job using the Quake3 engine as a starting point for the graphics. This game really shows off what an OpenGL graphics card can do. As the box says, over 20,000 frames of animation make up Julie Strain's movement throughout the game. And they weren't kidding. From swinging on ropes to using the multiple attack sequences with various weapons, the people at G.O.D. sure put alot of attention into detailed movement animation.
The overall environment accurately conveys a sense that you're on another planet, with everything from foreign plant matter to strange roaming animals. Everything from other games of this genre is included in this game. From useable levers and switches to characters that you can interact with, this game has it all. Julie's character can do everything from shimmy across walls, use monkey bars, to swinging and jumping from ropes.
An interesting feature are the combined attacks that Julie can do. For instance, while swinging the sword with the right mouse button, if you click and hold the left mouse button, she goes into a detailed sword maneuver. This adds multiple options for many weapons that you will come across later.
What sets this game apart from others of its kind if the originality of the story plot as well as the creatures/monsters you will come into contact with. Anyone familiar with the Heavy Metal francise will expect wild and fantastic locations, out of this world creatures and thought provoking sci-fi, and they won't be disappointed.
While I haven't yet finished playing this game, I am impressed with the fact that you feel part of a larger story. As the game moves along, you feel that you are involved with something bigger, instead of just shooting at the next monster that comes your way. I look forward to seeing how things play out, and am very glad I bought this game.
The box comes with 2 'bonus' CDROMs as well, which have video clips of interviews with Julie Strain, as well as material relating to the F.A.K.K 2 movie and other games by the Gathering of Developers.
Definitely a keeper for fans of Heavy Metal and people who like a good action/adventure game that keeps you guessing.
By the way, I don't recommend skipping the training at the beginning. It is very helpful since Julie can perform so many different actions.
