| Paneless's Full Review: Pilotwings for Nintendo 64 |
Any serious gamer of the 16-bit era has played PilotWings for the Super Nintendo. It is a quirky, innovative game that has never been imitated...until now.
This remake of the original is superior in every way. The original vessels to pilot have either been brought back or have been updated. The pilots this time around are a refreshing mix of short, tall, big and little. They are designed with obtuse angles and unusual polygons--a Japanese trait we don't see much of on these shores.
More or less PilotWings 64 is a demo for the Nintendo 64, showing you some of the things it can do with ease, and how pretty things look. But it can be so much more. Pilot the biplane around the islands and see how fast you can fly under the bridges, or how close you can get to the trees without crashing. Hang out in the hang glider and catch wind for a little bit. Boost up the rocket pack and time yourself on the targets.
Each stage has fun little missions that must be completed in order to open up later stages of the game. Fly through all of the hoops in the biplane to open up the hang gliding espionage stage.
Then there is the camera. Long before Pokemon Snap was a glimmer in Nintendo's eye, PilotWings featured a camera and a photo album that adds an entire dimension to the game.
