This is my second GPS. My old one had to connect to a laptop and was not near as useful. This thing gets the job done. It beeps at you well before you need to make a turn and again when you are at the turn. It then provides a big arrow on the screen showing you which way to turn. My old GPS required two people, one to drive the car and a navigator to run the GPS/laptop computer. I can now drive the car and Garmin GPS V is the only navigator I need. When I use it on hikes in the deep forest I wish it had magnetic compass and an altimeter and a way to expand the memory. It's very light weight and fits good in my hand. I found the operation much more intuitive then my old Magellan. It interfaces well with the map software that comes with it. You can turn tracking on and leave a bread crumb trail that you can save. Later when you get home, you can upload the track to your desktop computer and see clearly where you hiked.
I have used GPS's since they come on the market and am really impressed with the GPS V's capabilities when it comes to mapping detail. I am however, disappointed in the pricing of Their MAPSOURCE software. But, I guess something's got to cost you to make up for the reasonable price of the unit itself.
This GPS V is awesome. It is very accurate except when there are close roads to the highway - it sometimes thinks you are on those other roads. If you change your route it tells you how to get back on route.
I unfortunately returned it because of it's limited memory - it could not hold a portion of MI where I travel for detailed maps. Streetpilot is a big step up in $$$$, may have to look at Magellan (which does not have autoroute capability).
