Mercata Does not Add Up to Savings

When I first read about Mercata in the "New York Times," I though it was a fantastic idea. We all know the way business works. The more you buy, the cheaper the price gets, so why not pass that on to the consumer. That is how Mercata is supposed to work, although I am sorry to report that I do not think it actually works.
First, I want to say that I have never ordered anything from Mercata, nor do I know anyone that has ordered a product from the site. My experience is derived from browsing the site myself and comparing prices.
The major problem that I see with this site is that the prices are not any cheaper than in stores, and in fact often they are more expensive. If you browse their products, and then check out a Best Buy or Circuit City ad, you will see that those stores' prices are often cheaper than Mercata. My favorite example is for the TiVo system. I looked at that product, and on the Mercata webpage, it said Suggested Retail Price $499.99, Mercata Price $499.99. Where are the savings? In addition, I once clicked on an ad for Mercata to buy a Palm Pilot. To my surprise, Mercata did not even sell Pilots at that time?!?
The other problem I have with this site is that you do not know how much you are spending until the purchase time is over. How are you supposed to determine your savings if you do not know the price? I try to budget my purchases which means I like to know how much I am spending before I make the purchase instead of hoping that the price may at some time drop.
In closing, I suggest passing on Mercata. Unless their prices really drop, it is better for you too shop at Best Buy, or check fro deals at DealTime.com.
