I joined Mercata while they offered their $50.00 incentive for new members.
I really did not have very high expectations, subscribing to the "ya get what ya pay for" belief...
BUT- those 50 "Mercata Dollars" helped keep me well within my holiday shopping budget. A member is able to use those 50 dollars toward one-half the price of an item- and free shipping!
I purchased four items from Mercata for much, much less than I would have paid in a brick & mortar. One of them even came overnight FedEx to assure Christmas delivery- and since Mercata had run out of the low-end version of the kitchen appliance item I bought, they gave me the "high-end" one for no additional cost!
Mercata's "Powerbuy" concept is pretty neat- members lower the price of a selected item (within reason- read their agreement carefully) by sheer volume of "bidders." I was able to purchase a 4-pack of SassyŽ Baby Toys for $8.00, when they retailed for over 28.00. (total Powerbuy cost was 16.00, minus my 1/2 Mercata Dollars incentive, and free shipping).
Caveat Emptor: You may need to search a while before finding an outright "good" deal (if you don't have the 50.00 off incentive)- some of their prices seemed over-inflated to start off. Even with a Powerbuy- check around before putting in a bid, as you may actually find the item at a competitor for less!
