Diamond Buying Advice - Who should you trust?
Dec 30 '99 (Updated Jan 01 '00)
Finding a diamond merchant can be almost as hard as finding a diamond (sometimes harder).
- Ask around. - If you are looking for a good jeweler, the best thing you can do is ask other people who they go to and who they trust. Look at the jewelry they purchased from this person and find out what type of environment it is. This is often an easy way to have someone do the legwork for you!
- Don’t let yourself be pressured. - If a jewelry store is pressuring you, then you should probably leave before you make a mistake and buy something you don’t want. After all you are the customer. The decision is yours.
- Figure out what you want before you go to buy. - If you know what you are looking for, it is not only easier to find it, but you will be less like to give into sales pressure.
- Shop around - Even if you think you know who you want to purchase from, shop around first and find out what to expect, how much your item runs and what type of items are out there.
Once you find a store you think you like:
- Find out about the return policy - A reputable jeweler will stand behind his purchases and take them back if necessary.
- If you are making a big purchase find out if their stones are certified - Very often diamonds are certified to assure that you are getting what you pay for. Most reputable jewelry stores will have certified stones available.
- Don’t be misled by a “Sale” - Just because an item is on “sales” doesn’t mean you are getting a bargain. Shop around if you don’t know how much it should cost before you purchase a big-ticket item.
Most importantly buy what you – not the salesperson – likes.
