He never actually asked me to marry him...

Apr 15 '00

I was completely surprised (and perhaps a little disappointed) when I came back from Tom's brother's wedding without a diamond ring on my finger. Tom had been hinting about how romantic it would be to get engaged at a wedding. And what better wedding than that of his own brother? I found out later that he'd wanted to do that, but his brother's wife didn't like the idea...It was, after all, her day, and I can understand not wanting to let anyone else steal the thunder...

The wedding was July 17th in Indianapolis. We returned July 19th to our respective homes in upstate New York.

July 20th was our 11 month anniversary. We decided to get all dressed up and go out to a nice restaurant to celebrate. He was supposed to pick me up at 5:00 to leave. Being female, I need to take my time getting ready. So when he called at 4:30 asking if I was ready yet, I had to tell him I needed the extra half hour to finish getting ready. As we talked on the phone, the hot rollers were still in my hair. Sounding a little disappointed, he said okay, he'd see me in half an hour.

After a little scenic detour through the Clifton Commons, the closest thing we have to a park in our area, we arrived at the restaurant, a nice little steakhouse called the Dakota.

He went up to the salad bar with me, even though we both know he doesn't like salad. I made perhaps one of the best salads I've ever tasted, and we returned to our table. The waiter brought us some of their fresh baked bread, and Tom picked at that to tide himself over until our entrees came.

Conversation was a little awkward. I knew something was up. I don't think he knew I knew. He was just very nervous and fidgety. He's not normally like that. I started getting anxious, but I didn't want to get my hopes up. Every time the waiter came, though, I wondered if I was going to get a little velvet box. But when we got the entrees, I still had no little ring box.

We decided to have dessert. I was pretty full from dinner, but at Tom's urging, I ordered dessert anyways. Maybe, I thought, maybe this is when he's going to pop the question...

Again I was wrong.

I was beginning to get rather disheartened.

The check came. It was time to leave. But Tom excused himself to the restroom. I sat there, a little disappointed, but still curious as to why he was acting so strange.

When he came back, and after he paid the bill, Tom told me he had something for me. He reached nervously into his pocket, got down on one knee, and produced that little black velvet box I'd been waiting to see for so long. He opened it up to reveal a diamond ring.

I couldn't speak. I was literally speechless. (And as you can tell, I'm usually not at a loss for words.) He didn't speak either. After about a minute or so - I'm not sure exactly how much time passed - he finally said, "Well...?"

Not knowing what else to say, I immediately said, "YES!"

We kissed. He put the ring on my finger. It fit perfectly. No need for adjustment. It was gorgeous and absolutely perfect in every way.

So...he never actually said the words "Will you marry me?" He never actually asked me to marry him. But I said YES anyways. It was so cute, and so sweet... A memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

P.S. The wedding date is 10/20/2000. Check out our wedding web page at http://www.eggplant.jellybean.com/wedding.htm
