NYC's Diamond District! - Do's and Don'ts
by lynn4 | Jan 14 '00
I have been buying jewelry in the city for almost twenty years and love NYC’s diamond district (both of them). In that time I have learned a lot about what to do and what not to do.

There are actually two diamond districts in NYC. The...

Do go to Diamond Scene!!! 9 West 47th Street, Best quality, best prices, family owned! (Reply to this comment)

I agree with most of the people below. The stores to trust are the finer stores on the block, the most reputable being the closest ones to fifth avenue. I do not even look into the stores closer to 6th ave.

Diamond Scene is one of these stores. The family who runs the shop has been in the Jewelry business for 30 years, and that is just one generation. They have the most amazing selection I have witnessed and they can work with everyones budget. I have taken many of my friends and all of them were more than happy. Having a jeweler you can trust is extremely important. I have been ripped off in the past but have learned from my mistakes and only go to Diamond Scene.

Their prices are also very good, since the store is family owned and run they can afford to give the best prices on the block!

Shipping Your Merch (Reply to this comment)
by godzzzila
Do not let them ship the jewelry to your home.

This is not a good advice.

It is OK to ship your merch out of state. And a lot of customers do that if they live somewhere else but NY.
As far as the jewelry shop itself: you have to do your research.
- Read reviews online
- See if the store has a website
- Call beforehand make an appointment just to look and meet the staff.

I know that all the stores that are closer to 5th ave such as: Allure, Sea Wave Diamonds, Malakov and so on have been in business for quite a while. From my own experience those are the guys you can trust. We personally buy jewelry from SEA Wave Diamonds.

buying jewelry in diamond district (Reply to this comment)
by richdor
I am new here and as a former Brooklynite I felt I had to comment. First of all, don't buy jewelry on Canal Street! They are so high pressure and will practically grab your arm to stay inside their store. I actually had one woman follow me out of the store, down the street, to get me to buy a multi-stone diamond ring! I actually succumbed to the pressure and bought one carat diamond studs. Took them to Macy's the next day for an appraisal and they were not even close to the color and clarity the store stated. Any way, I went back and demanded my money back and after threatening them with police intervention , they took earrings off my charge. I should have trusted my instincts when they would not give me a written appraisal from them. By the way, I paid $1500 and they were worth $1000! I even filed a complaint against them at the BBB in NYC. I live in NC (Charlotte) now but go back to the city often. If you are looking for honesty, try Salvatore and Co. They sell on the internet but are extremely reputable. They bend over backwards for you, too. Good luck and be careful and stay away from Canal street!!

Helpful Advise- David S Diamonds has moved to 550 5th Ave. (Reply to this comment)
by aedpm
Those who are checking out the NYC diamond district first hand. Lynn is right on the money. For those who are curious about David S Diamonds, Inc. they have moved to a showroom at 550 5th Av. Suite 700 (between 46th and 45th St.)Good idea to call first they are busy. The store currently located at 9 West 47th is a completely different business and experience. Don't get them confuse.

Good Advice, and... (Reply to this comment)

Based upon my experience today I'd say the vast majority of people should avoid the NYC Diamond District altogether. (I read this post after my visit.) I was shopping for a men's gold bracelet. There seem to be two types of stores in the diamond district--a single owner store, and a store that rents out counter space to independent operators, so that a single store might have ten different companies selling stuff. You'd think that this would create wonderful competition and that you could bargain for a great price. But I think that this is the case ONLY, as the OP said, IF YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT THE FAIR PRICE SHOULD BE AND YOU KNOW HOW TO HAGGLE. I nosed around and RAN away. It's a lousy atmosphere filled with high pressure sales tactics.

Legal advice (Reply to this comment)
by Schlamozzel
Just to let you know,
Your comment about taking jewelry (or other merchandise) from a store, and shipping an empty box to avoid sales tax is ILLEGAL. It violates Sales tax laws in every State and Commonwealth in the nation. Unless the state does not have a sales tax, it MUST be paid if you walk out with the merchandise. Get caught doing it, and you stand to suffer SUBSTANTIAL penalties.
