Buy a guitar, it's worth it.

Buy a guitar. Period.
Why?
There are countless good reasons.
I have many guitars and they have paid back their cost to me many times.
A guitar is an instrument that unlike the piano, can play any style of music, on it's own, and is so much easier to learn than the piano.
I took piano lessons for 2 years and learned nothing, but fiddling around witha guitar taught me what i needed to know.
It's a simple instrument, easy to maintain, and easy to relate to. Face it, guitars are everywhere, in every form of music.
Any kid can realte to it, trust me.
A guitar is also cheaper than a piano, or flute, or whatnot.
You can buy a reasonably good sammick, or yamaha acoustic for 100-200 dollars. An electric will probably put you up to 150-250 dollars.
Either way, it's a great instrument. It's just a wonderful way to learn about music, and any teen, pre-teen, or adult will love it.
I would recommend first and foremost for the absolute beginner, an acoustic guitar. It helps build technique much faster. The saying is, if you can play it on an acoustic, you can play it on anything. A good solid guitar is nessacary. For the budgety people, i would recommend a Yamaha, or Samick, 100-200 dollars. FOr the not so pricey, a washburn guitar, and for the more pricey, a simon and patrick or ovation 300-800 dollars. Don't buy what you can't meet. Make sure the action is lower, and the guitar sounds good, and plays good. You can't learn on a bad guitar. Take lessons, it'll help you. I regret not taking them.
For the stubborn "i want an electric" person, i would reccomend a Samick (100-200), a sturdy Ibanez (200-400), or a Fender (300-god knows what). Amps are essential, and i would recommend a good practice amp for the beginner (50-150), and for the more attuned player, a marshall stack (200-infinity), or a Peavey Stack (200-infinity).
Again, look for good action and playability.
In general, don't fall for gimmicks. A guitar is not better due to a graphic, or neat packaging. There are some really good guitars out there that are not all that glitzy, but are incredible.
Enjoy your gift! i know you will!
