Sweet Dreams Are Made of This! (Helping Hands Write Off)

Nov 04 '00

Ah, how to start? I could put together a list of five gifts I’d like that were purely unselfish…world peace, an end to hunger, cures for cancer, AIDs, and the common cold. I could, but I decided to be selfish for today’s opinion. So, here we go, Five Gifts I’d Like! (And to quote the Eurythmics…”Sweet dreams are made of this!”)

1) I’d like three days. Let me explain. Day One: The first day would be all for me. No one else around. No children asking for this, that or the other thing. No diapers. No laundry. No ringing phone. Just me, preferably in a nice hotel room so I wouldn’t start cleaning or vacuuming while I had no children or husband around to mess it up. A nice hot tub, lots of bubbles, a tv and a remote control that only I had control over. Some quiet so I could catch up on some reading. Ahhhh.

Day Two: Me and my husband. No children around. Just us two being a “couple” for a day. It’s been a very long time since we’ve done that. Going for a walk, window shopping, holding hands. Seeing a movie that isn’t rated G. Making love and not worrying that we might wake the children. Or, even better, not having to wait until the children have gone to bed to make love! How scandalous! ; )

Day Three: This day would be family day. It would be so wonderful to be able to spend one entire day with all of the family together, not working around the house, not doing homework, not running errands. Going to the park, seeing a movie (back to the G rating again), playing a game, making popcorn, snuggling on the couch under a big warm blanket. Talking. Unfortunately this happens too rarely in my home. (My husband is a long-distance truck driver and is not home much. When he is he has much too much to catch up on around the house.)

2) A cleaning service to come in to my home and clean it top to bottom while I’m enjoying my three days. No dust bunnies under the beds. No cobwebs in the basement. No Cheerios under my desk.(I really have no idea why they’re always under there. Perhaps my daughter stashes them there for an emergency snack?) I can’t even begin to imagine how wonderful it would be to come home to an immaculate house! With three children aged nine and under I know it wouldn’t last long, but it sure would be nice while it lasted!

3) A room. Not just any room, but a library. My husband and I have amassed over one thousand books, and it would be oh, so wonderful to be able to keep them all on shelves in a room just for reading. I love books, just the sight of them is comforting to me. Having over half of them in boxes in the basement has not improved my disposition. I love to read, and I will reread my favorites dozens of times. Hard to do when they’re all packed away somewhere in the basement. (Maybe the Organizational Expert could help me with this one too!)

4) A phone card with no limit! I would dearly love to phone my friends and family, who are scattered all over the world, as often as I’d like, and talk for as long as I’d like. Email is great, I have to admit. It has probably saved me from going bankrupt, but the sound of a voice, even over the phone lines, is a wonderful thing, indeed. You can get so much comfort from the sound of a friend’s voice. There is so much love in the voice of a grandfather talking to his grandchildren. Yes, email is great, but it’s not a substitute for the human voice.

I said this list was going to be a selfish one, but I lied. Here’s the last of my five gifts I’d like.

5) I would like every person who reads this opinion to give to someone less fortunate than they are. It does not have to be a financial donation. It can be a donation of your time to a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. It can be offering to help that elderly neighbour down the street who’s having a hard time getting around. It can be giving blood to help save a life. Even crocheting or knitting baby blankets for the preemies in the hospital! There are so many different ways that we all can give. There are even free donation web sites that you can donate to if you’re not able to give financially or physically! Check out www.freedonation.com. There are several charities to donate to on this site, all free.

There are homeless people out there who will be freezing to death when winter hits! There are hungry families, some of whom have to resort to eating out of trash cans to live! There are abused women being turned away from shelters because there is no room! There are children, small, innocent children, who will not know the wonder of Christmas this year! You can make a difference!

This review is done as part of a write-off called Epinion’s Helping Hands. All of the participants have so generously decided to contribute all money earned from this write-off to help someone in need. They have written in a variety of areas but the common denominator is that we will make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate then ourselves. If you would like to help someone in need this year but were not able to participate in this write-off, you can do so by reading as many of these reviews as possible. Please take a minute out of your day to help another. All monies I earn at Epinion’s from November 4, 2000 until November 30, 2000 will be used to purchase toys for the Gifts For Kids program. I am honored to present you with the list of people who have decided to participate with me in this Helping Hands Write-Off.
