Mom's Gift to Teen Driver

When my children were teenagers and closing in on the dreaded age of driving, I really worried. I thought what could I do to protect my child and make them a more knowledgeable driver. Each went through Driver's training, they drove countless hours with me, listening to me tell them things that I felt were of importance.
Then one night it happened, I was with my oldest son and we saw one of his friends in an accident. We stopped to see if we could help. The poor kid didn't know what to do, so I called the police, his parents and helped him find all the paperwork in his car to present to the police. It was at this time that I looked at my son and told him this was not going to happen to him or his brother and sister.
I went home and drafted a rough copy then I typed and laminated a list of things to do in an accident. I made three copies and put two away for the other kids when it came their turn to drive. My list included the following:
*Call police or 911 if injuries. (police phone numbers were included).
*Call mom.
*Have registration and insurance information ready for police.
*Be sure someone is directing traffic around the accident.
Each of the kids were given the following and it was mandatory they carry them at all times in their vehicles. One very good flashlight, one small first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
My daughter was in an accident and when I rolled up on the scene one of the police officers took me aside and commended me for my foresight. He said he had never seen a teenager so well equipped for an accident. Then he told me with a grin that my daughter told him, "This is my mom's idea, I thought it was crazy when she insisted we do these things, now I'm glad she did."
So please don't just give your kids a driver's license and a car. Prepare that car and your teen for the worst case scenario. Every little bit of protection and knowledge will help.
