Gifts for the High School Senior
Apr 04 '00
Graduating from high school is one of life's milestones. From there, we either embark on our careers or head off to college. As a senior, I sent out hundreds of announcements to friends and family, not realizing what a huge gift giving occasion this is! So, here they are, with personal anecdotes intertwined, five GREAT gift ideas for the graduating senior.
1. Travel. A very dear friend's parents treated a group of us to a week in New Orleans as our graduation gift (including plane fair and hotel accommodations). There may not be any opportunities for people this age to travel in the near future, so a paid trip is an excellent idea. If it is a paid trip abroad, all the better--interacting with different cultures will broaden their minds and better prepare them for the future.
2. A Car. Yeah, I know, this is a big ticket item. But I don't know how I could have made it through my first years in school without the car my parents gave me for graduation. It allowed me to make more frequent trips home, I never worried about getting to the grocery store, all in all it made my life much easier.
3. Luggage. A nice matching set. Otherwise, the graduating senior will cart his or her items around in trash bags.
4. Money. Goes without saying, but this is a time in life when it is really needed. College tuition, application fees, etc. add up fast! As I recall, I received almost $2,000 at graduation, and it went a long way in setting me up for my first year in college.
5. A nice camera. Will allow the graduate to record college and life experiences. I am in a "visual" major, so my camera has also proven to be a much-needed school supply.
Well, those are my top five choices. If they seem more pricey than you had hoped, don't worry. A little thought into what the graduate will need in the coming months will allow you to select a great gift at any price point.
