Gifts for a H.S.Senior: Give what i won't get

Apr 22 '00

I am a high school senior headed full-steam for college life, and believe me, I need stuff. The following is my brief but essential list of great gift ideas for your loved one or illegitimate child about to graduate.

First things first. If he or she is allowed having a car on campus, GIVE 'EM ONE. Nothing says "get out of my house and depend on me no more" quite like a method of transportation. As for me, I will be receiving no car, other than maybe a Hot Wheels, followed by rounds of raucous laughter from my half-drunk great-uncles-in-law.

Second most important to a vehicle, and a very close second, is money. Any cash donation will be gleefully accepted with praise and compliments for your health and well-being. If nothing else, it will teach the newly-independent-one how easy it is to lose money in college, and for those of us with an I.Q. above our age, it will greatly aid in the financial pinch of having to buy your own Doritos.

Third, a computer. I know, this may seem more important than the first two, but in all actuality, money and a car are harder to come by than access to a computer. This gift tells its receiver, hey, I'm paying your tuition, so use this laptop and don't drop out. Computers also provide a way of meeting others in your dorm (hey man, can i check my email?) and give a sense of responsibility, especially laptops, 'cause if it gets lost or broken, you are the one to pay the price.

As a rule, parents tend not to send their kids packing with a case of beer and a carton of cigarettes, and for this reason these gifts fall to sixth and seventh on the list. To make up for this, any and all types of candy are a great idea. They provide munchie material when cramming, and they are always accepted when offered, increasing popularity with dorm friends or significant others.

Televisions are not the best idea to give to your own kid, but for somebody else's, go for it. For one's own offspring, however, something less distracting from studies is recommended, such as a fancy CD player. Headphones and accessories can also be given as follow up gifts for birthdays and Christmas, making future planning easier. And hey, everyone loves music, so you can't go wrong with this one.

That's about it for my recommendations. I trust you will make the right decision. :)
