Look around on all the online stores there are today, and what do you see? That they all need a credit card to shop at! Now think about a teen who wants to purchase 'stuff' they want online - movies, CD, clothes, all the usual stuff. Now how many of these teens have credit cards to shop online with? Not a whole lot, I'm sure. So here's a suggestion that will make many a teen exremely happy this x-mas.
First things first, visit http://www.webcertificates.com, and read up on them. The basic idea behind the site is that you can purchase webcertificates in any amount you wish, and send it to somebody. The recipient then gets a number, that can be used like a mastercard number on any website that accepts credit cards! However, because it is a debit card, holding exactly the amount of money you put on it, your teen can't run up a bill a mile long that will surprise you when you get it. They are limited strictly to what they have on the web certificate
For an additional fee (currently $6.95) you can request an actul plastic card to be mailed to you. This card can be used not only online now, but also at any merchant that accepts Mastercard. This is a great way to teach a teen a bit of responsibility with managing their money, while also limiting what they can charge to a card. It also gives them a good bit of independence with their money, since now if they want to spend it online, they are able to do so. However, some parents may be a little wary of this suggestion because of the fact taht it means they would lose control of their teen's spending habits.
For parents who have a reasonably responsible teen, whom they wish to give a little independence to, giving them a Webcertificate for x-mas might b e a good idea. But as i mentioned, some parents may want to beware this idea if they feel they still need to watch where their child spends their money.
