Brilliant, witty...I'm sooo jealous : ) (Reply to this comment)
by Caleo
How can I not adore someone who can write so eloquently about a trash can?! Sadly I have a $5 can that falls into the doesn't work, bag slips, looks utterly gross category (as you so adequately described)...I can just imagine the look on hubby's face if I try to sell him on a $200 trash can though.
Great work Nick, I'm off to that website to drool over all the amenities...

Trash Talker (Reply to this comment)
by caines
The last kitchen recepticle we bought I thought was as close to the Second Coming as we would get in my lifetime. A groovy Dutch or Swedish tall, black and chrome thing which quickly proved itself to be more of an object d'art as long as it wasn't asked to do too much. Like hold the trash bag in place.
It was more than I wanted to spend on a garbage can. Around $80 I think.
Your find sounds remarkably...well...remarkable! I am afraid of visiting the web site because there is the chance my American Express card may jump out of my wallet and start typing in its own number. (They can do that you know.)
Another fine review Mr. Peters!

Oh that this too too sullied/solid waste... (Reply to this comment)
by theeye
A review in the gift category, with a title that indicates that it's about solid waste, is a review that I would normally skip over. Fortunately, I've read enough of your work that I was able to suspend disbelief long enough to click on it.
Oh, my! I am in awe. Truly in awe. You have written a lyrical, entertaining piece on a trash can. A trash can.
And, like my own dear hubby, you do dishes. And more.
Brilliant. Positively, unequivocably brilliant.
Enjoy your trash can in good health. :-)

Gosh (Reply to this comment)
by RdeCassia
Sounds like something our household could use. Maybe I'll ask for this next holiday season (this is someone whose list this year included a huge shipment of pantyhose so I'll never run out, a potato masher and a food mill. I probably treasure these things more than the jewelry I got, nice as it is.).
What will they think of next? The $150, self-refreshing mechanical toilet brush? Actually, now that I think of it...

You are too kind...but thanks for the support.
As to the category, I tried to put it in Home & Garden, but there was no category available that was suitable for garbage or trash cans.
Imagine that!

Grown up (Reply to this comment)
by jrk
I recently read a review in which the writer made the observation that you know when you're grown up because you appreciate receiving kitchen appliances for Mother's Day, anniversaries, and other gift-giving occasions. I've never exactly thought of a trash can as an "appliance." It somehow never seemed sophisticated enough for such an appellation--until now, that is. Guess that makes you a grown up, too.

...here's what just happened:
I was sitting here reading your great review, murmuring and saying,"Wow!" under my breath occasionally, when my husband walked in and asked what I was reading. I said,"A really good review of a garbage can."
He just nodded, said,"Oh, how interesting," and backed slowly out of the room.
But it was a great review!

Both the review and your new trash bin.
I gather it keeps the beasts at bay as well. I hide my kitchen trash can in the pantry -- and not because it's ugly, but because my German Shepherd is quite adept at opening it.

No sissified rubber gloves for you, I like that! I'm the same way, despite my mother's dire warnings about what it will do to my skin.
Never have I read such a compelling review for a trashcan. I still can't quite wrap my brain around the idea of spending $200 for one, but after this epinion, I will find it weirdly tempting. Of course, I will say nothing of this to my husband, who is not a member of Epinions and who would probably suggest I take a break from the computer altogether. ;)

At first it seemed funny to hear a man rave about his trash can, but then I thought about my own husband who believes that the key to a better house and home is finding the right container to put things in. Our home is awash in containers--big giant plastic bins for toys and teeny tiny tupperware for the homemade baby food phase. Now he wants to buy some portfolios for our child's "art." Would that he was satisfied with a single trash recepticle.
Great review.

$160 sounds positively reasonable... (Reply to this comment)
by Mr.Eyore
given that on my last trip to Bed Bath & Beyond (or was it Bed & Bath Warehouse?) I saw a standard, though chrome covered, bullet top trash can for $600. SIX HUNDRED BUCK! For a trash can? That's like my drinking and smokes budget for a month.
I envy your life, getting to fix up a beautiful Craftsman and landscape and whatnot on your free time. But you shouldn't deny yourself the occasional joys of mac and cheese with ham and peas. Nor the joys of letting someone else clean up every once in a while.

Well, sounded like $160 to me, :-D
Trash bags $4.00
Lemon scented stick up for the lid $2.00
Trash can $160.00
A man who takes out the trash without nagging.... priceless.
Great job! I wouldn't mind having one of these.

Sounds like my kind of purchase (Reply to this comment)
by Sloucho
It's really important to have a trash can you can rely on. My wife and I aren't anywhere near getting one like this, but when I screwed up the lid on the very nicest kitchen trash can we've ever owned (acquired, you'll be pleased to know, at a garage sale), repairing it was a top priority even though it was 1:30 in the morning. I didn't want to wake up to a kitchen without a reliable waste receptacle. You're definitely speaking my language.

Nick, only you could write an illuminating and ultimately fascinating review of a trash can!
Although at that price, I suppose it's more properly a "waste receptacle," eh?

I mean, Lisa already took the Mastercard variant that was running through my head as I read.
Septober 28, 2108
We started carefully working on the rubble over Monrovia, CA, this week. This area wasn't hit as hard as some of the major commercial centers by Quake2037, and so artifacts are often found nearly intact.
Today we made an interesting find, perhaps of interest to the students studying antequakian art. In what was clearly a food-preparation area, we have found a rather unusual hollow metal cylinder with traces of organic residue on the insides. Most anthropologists are of the mind that the inhabitants of this domicile participated in religious rituals requiring animal sacrifices. There has been one dissenting view from CMIT in East America that strangely beautiful receptacle may have been used for the temporary storage of refuse. We will not deign such speculations with comment.

Just wanted to let you know that after mulling it over ever since first reading this epinion, my husband and I made A Buying Decision this past Sunday at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Yup, we too are now the proud owners of a $200 space age trash can (we paid full price -- the guy at the checkout looked at us like we were crazy).
It really is cool. :-)

I visited my sister, "theeye". I walked into the kitchen, took one look under the counter, and shouted out "That must be Nick's can!". Now I can fully appreciate your enthusiasm (although I don't think I'll ever be able to justify spending $200 on a trash receptical).
