Five Gifts - Non Humor
Dec 15 '99 (Updated Feb 08 '00)
For those of you that have read some of my other epinions, you would expect me to break out with Steve Martin's Christmas Wish here. In effort to preserve the sanctity of the holiday season here is Five gifts I'd Like:
1. Honesty - "The truth will set you free" Think of how easier life would be if we were a little more honest with each other. It is very easy to be angered by someone and even easier to talk about that person to a third party. However it is much more difficult to talk to that person face to face. Why not tell that person exactly what you think? Try to use some tact. That person does not deserve to be belittled. If you have a problem with someone tell them and be honest. Before you tell them take time to think about it or else you may say something you will regret later. Above all be honest, when trying to settle your differences nothing will come out of hiding your true intentions.
2. Be true to yourself - "It is not the small things you fail to do but the small things that you do" I was receiving dating advice from a friend. He could not have said it better. When I am trying to win the attraction of that special female, I always beat myself up over the small things I failed to do. After talking to my friend, I thought about it and he was right. The little moments I missed were nothing compared the little moments I did not miss life's cue cards (the cue cards that put you in the right moment at the right time). Seeing as that probably did not make the least bit of sense, I'll get to the point. Learn to know yourself. Do not be afraid to find faults within yourself. To relate to the story, my fault is that I dwell on what I could have done better rather then what I did do. You can't really make positive changes in yourself without first understand the flaws within yourself.
3. Give - "Do unto others as they would do to you" I know I am going to sound like a sappy boy scout when I say this but I'll say it anyway. The next time you see that old lady having trouble opening the door or you see that person trying to merge into your lane, help them out. Giving can be so much more then a gift. You can give some one a hug when they look down. Every act, no matter how small, counts. Sometimes when life deals a bad hand, just remember when you stumble or fall your true friends will be there for you. In turn you can be there for them. That is the spirit of giving.
4. Motivation - "Ambition makes up for talent" Don't let any one ever fool you into believing that you cannot succeed. All it takes is motivation. Even if you can't throw a football and you weigh a one hundred and ten pounds, you will just have to work harder to become that football player. As much as society tries to make certain positions in life seem like they a reserved for an elite class there is nothing to hold you back from following your dream. Right here in Albuquerque (the land that lacks opportunity) Bill Gates created the largest software company of our time. Jewel lived in a car for a period in her life. Whatever you decide to do, never give up.
5. Be Nice - "With harm towards none, do as ye will" I feel like a mother when I say this, but try to be good if not civil to one another. Sure there are many jerks in the world but that does not stop you from showing kindness in return. If some one has hurt you then you will gain nothing by hurting them back. At the same time don't take abuse from anyone. If some one is constantly goading you then stand up for yourself. Always be prepared to defend yourself. Once you proven that you won't stand for it, don't go any further. Whether it is a scrap in the schoolyard or the harsh words of bully don't let that person drag you down. Above all be nice, any person with the right amount of rage can pound someone to slag or make someone cry but how admirable is the person that stand on their own without stepping on anyone else.
There was my advice for five gifts that would make my holiday season if I saw more of it. Take the advice to heart or discard it or go find out for yourself what everything means to you.
(If I had a sixth gift this Christmas, I would wish for everything that Steve Martin said in his Christmas Wish -- sorry I couldn't help myself)
