No-fail gifts for teenage girls

Jan 02 '00

Here are a few gift suggestions for teenage girls that are always a hit; any one of them is great as a birthday gift, or combine them for a larger gift for the special girl in your life:

#1. A subscription to one or more magazines: typical favorites are Jane, Mademoiselle, and Marie Claire for a 15-19 year old. Jump is a great magazine for girls a bit younger, junior high through 9th grade. Most girls love these magazines for their honest stories, fashion and beauty tips, and interviews with celebrities.

#2. Gift certificates. I know, I know, some people will tell you they're too impersonal, but I don't know many teens who will turn down a chance to spend money at the mall, no matter what form it's in. With gift certificates, there are so many options: give one for a free manicure or pedicure at the local salon, movie theaters or Blockbuster video (these two are fail-proof for teenage boys as well), or Amazon.com (which are good for books AND music) if you're not sure which mall store to choose.

#3. A basket full of goodies that you've selected from the local discount drugstore. Some suggestions for what to include: lip gloss, mascara, nail polish and manicure tools, body wash, lotion, a disposable camera, sugarless gum, hair elastics, candles. All of the above are easy to choose, even if you're not sure exactly what brand the girl usually uses. Put everything in a plastic basket (many colors and sizes should be available at the drugstore) and give!

#4. A journal with a variety of nice pens, or a sketchbook with a set of colored pencils is a sweet gift for most creative girls. Visit your local art store to see the selection of beautiful pens that are available.

#5. Bath/body gift sets are usually a hit, and they come in many sizes and price ranges. Philosophy (available at department stores) offers a wide selection of handsomely packaged gift sets: an example is The Cookbook, which runs for $25 and contains ten different body washes/shampoos/conditioners, each with a yummy smell like chocolate chip cookie, raspberry, and banana. Other sets are available in the $20-$80 price range. Attractive gift sets are also available at the Body Shop, Bath & Body Works, and Garden Botanika.
