1. How do I write a review?
On any product, topic, or review page, click the Write a Review link. You will be taken to a form where you can enter your review and submit it.

2. What are the requirements for submitting a review?
A review must be a minimum of 20 words and pass Epinions' automated language check. In order for your reviews to be published on the site, you must be a registered member and have confirmed your account. If you have not confirmed your account, your review will be saved as a draft until you confirm.

3. What is unpublished content?
Unpublished content is reviews or essays that a member has written and saved but has not yet published for other users to read.

4. What does it mean to save a review as a draft?
This feature allows you to save a work in progress. After you submit a review, it is stored in draft form, but will not be visible to others on the site until you publish it. While the review is a draft, you can continue to edit it and make changes, and then choose to publish it at a later date.

5. How do I publish a review saved as a draft?
On your Account Summary page is a list of any unpublished reviews you have submitted. To publish a draft, click on the link to update the review. Make any changes you would like, then click Preview your review. If your review meets the minimum requirements, you will be given the option to publish it.

6. What is the difference between a Product Review and an Essay?
A Product Review is intended to give the reader detailed information about one specific product. An Essay offers the reader general advice on a type of product, on how to use a type of product, or on decisions that are not related to a specific product.

7. What is a "retired" essay topic?
As Epinions.com grows and the focus of the site changes, some essay topics are no longer applicable, and therefore may be closed to new submissions. Here are some important facts you should know about retired essay topics:
  • Essays written about retired topics do not earn Eroyalties credits.
  • Users may still submit new essays on this topic as before, but this topic will likely be closed to new submissions in the future.
  • Any essay submitted about this topic will still be accessible through the author's profile page, and can still be rated by other members.

    8. What if I want to write about a product or service that is not listed?
If you don't see a product that you want to write a review on, ask a Category Lead. There is a good chance it can be added by the Category Leads in the specific category. Category Leads have the tools to create products that are missing from our database. Epinions considers this process to be a helpful courtesy provided by the Category Leads rather than their main responsibility, so please be patient.

    9. Can I post the same review more than once?
No. Each product or topic must have a unique review. Although many products may contain similarities (for example, among multiple sets of knives by a single manufacturer, the same text could apply to several sets of knives), there should be a minimum of 100 words of unique text in each review and should compare the two products.

    10. Can I post more than one review about the same product?
No. A member may only write one review per product or service. If you wish to add to your review on the product, however, you may update your review at any time. You may submit more than one essay on the same topic. In the Travel Category, you may submit multiple reviews of one destination.

    11. Can I include HTML in my review?
You can add simple HTML tags to make the text of your reviews bold or place it in italics. To do so, add a <b> before the text and </b> after the text for boldface type, or a <i> and </i> for italics:
    <b>This text is bold.</b>
    <i>This text in italics.</i>
<br> will create a line break in your review.
<p> will create a paragraph break -- roughly the equivalent of two <br> tags.
    Some important details:
  • To add bold or italicized text, you need to use an opening tag to mark the start of the your formatted text and a closing tag to mark the end of your formatted text. See the examples above for more information.
  • Break tags (<br>) and paragraph tags (<p>) do not require closing tags.
  • Epinions is unable to support requests for HTML help.
  • You can also include links in your reviews. See question 12 for more information.

    12. Can I include links in my review?
Yes. However, there are a few guidelines for adding links to your review:
    • You can only include links in your review body. You cannot include links in review titles, pros and cons, or any other parts of the review form.
    • Only links to Epinions.com will be accepted. If you try to create a link to another site, it will be automatically removed when you try to submit your review.
      • Ex. If you add:
"See Yahoo for more information" and "Yahoo" is a hyperlink to http://www.yahoo.com then your review will not contain a link to Yahoo. Instead, your review will read:
        See http://www.yahoo.com for more information.

    13. Does Epinions edit or delete reviews?
No. When you preview a review, the Epinions.com spell-checker and language filter will highlight any problematic words so that you can make your own changes. Once the review passes these automated checks and you publish it, it will be available to others. Epinions does not manually change the text of published reviews.

Epinions does not remove reviews from the site unless a review or its author is found to be in violation of the Epinions User Agreement.

    14. How do I update a review I wrote in the past?
To update an existing review, you must be signed in to your account. Once signed in, visit the review you would like to update and click the Update link. You will be given a chance to edit the review or add new information, after which you can republish it. Note: Epinions may at some point limit or restrict the ability to update reviews.

    15. How do I delete a review?
To delete a review, you must be signed in to your account. Once signed in, visit the review you would like to delete and click the Delete link. You will be asked to confirm your request to delete, after which the review will be removed and cannot be restored. Note: Epinions may at some point limit or restrict the ability to delete reviews

    16. Can I post my reviews to other web sites?
As stated in the Epinions.com User Agreement, you are free to publish your content wherever you choose. If you post your reviews in a substantially similar form elsewhere, your Epinions reviews may receive fewer visitors as search engines divide their traffic between the two copies.

To avoid posting "substantially similar" reviews to Epinions and another site, make sure your Epinions review contains at least 1/3 different or new content and an entirely different title.

Posting substantially similar reviews to other price comparison sites, in particular, may make you ineligible for status as a Top Reviewer, Advisor, Moderator, or Category Lead. Price Comparison sites offer functionality that lists products for sale at more than one store or seller and the ability to compare more than one price for a product. Examples of price comparison sites include, but are not limited to: PriceGrabber.com, Shopzilla.com, NextTag, Ciao, Dooyoo, Amazon, ShopWiki, and others. This policy applies only to reviews posted on or after September 13th, 2006. See the Reviewer Recognition FAQ for more information on how Top Reviewers, Advisors, Moderators, and Category Leads are selected.

    17. Does Epinions redistribute my reviews?
Epinions may redistribute your reviews in a variety of ways. Please consult the full User Agreement text for details.

    Top of page

    18. Do my reviews have to be positive?
No. Epinions wants you to be brutally honest in your reviews, even if it means saying negative things. Consumers who are trying to decide whether or not to buy a product need to know its good and bad aspects in order to make an informed decision.
