Horrible piece of junk
by treetopsue ,Mar 11 '06
Pros: none Cons: everything
Our machine is just over a year old and the pump has to be replaced, and as is typical, you can't get a new pump without buying a new motor. The parts have to be ordered and we've been quoted a price of $250 for this repair. Our repair man told us he tried this machine and got rid of it after two weeks because it didn't clean clothes. A dealer said his Whirlpool rep. told him not to put the model on the showroom floor because it is a piece of junk and the company has had too many problems with it. We are throwing in the towel before heading down the road of constant repairs and hours spent at the laundromat, and buying a new machine. There should be a recall! I can't believe this company is in the process of Maytag. Our alternatives for purchasing quality products is shrinking.

This is the worst washer I have EVER had.
by mazyeve ,Jul 19 '05
Pros: Electronics relatively easy to use although it is too limiting in choices of combinations. Cons: Does not get clothes clean and leaves them dingy it stinks inside. Overpriced.
This washer is horrible. I have had it for two years. I doesn't hold any more clothes than my old heavy duty washer. It is easy to use but it doesn't get my clothes clean. I have tried every kind of detergent made, including the "high efficiency" washers. Nothing has helped. I am totally embarrassed about the dinginess of all of my family's clothes. They don't look any cleaner than they were before they were washed. I have even used bleach in my whites. Nothing helps. I hate this washer because it does not get my clothes clean and it stinks. About 3 or 4 months ago I started noticing a musty smell in my washer. My clothes don't smell clean either. I have run bleach and vinegar through it and it still stinks. Please, do yourself a huge favor and tell everyone you know. DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER!!!!

Sear Calypso Nightmare
by patriciajb ,Mar 23 '07
Pros: Low water use, Large Tub Cons: Breaks down frequently.
My calypso washing machine broke down in April 2006. Of course parts were ordered. More parts were orders. Service techs don't show for appointments etc. Machine was fixed finally. In January of 07 machine started leaking. Parts and more parts and then wrong parts were ordered. Techs don't show for appointments. Its now late March parts are still back ordered. Water in my basement. I have taken 9 days of vacation time. Next week the tech is coming again for a new problem because the machine won't empty out. I don't qualify for a new machine under Sears "Lemon Law" because I haven't had 4 separate part failures. Sears answer is "sorry for the problems". I guess its ok for Sears to take 3 months to repair a washing machine. That is not a good business practice. I have been a loyal customer to Sears for over 20 years. NO MORE. I will never purchase anything from Sears again. No lawn mowers, no air conditioners, not even a screwdriver. My husband is active duty military and we move all around the country. Lowe's, Best Buy and Home Depot I will fill your cash registers with my money.

The Best Washer I've Used!
by b2happy ,Dec 05 '07
Pros: Huge washing tub, many settings to choose from, quiet, easy to remove clothing from. Cons: none
We love our calypso washer. It has a great variety of setting and it handles large loads very well. I seem to be doing 2-3 loads a day and with kids and pets things get pretty dirty. We have had it about 2 years now and have never had one problem. It was a really big purchase for our family, but, we have been very please with it.

3 WEEKS LATER AND IT'S HISTORY
by seabeeadp ,Oct 21 '05
Pros: Nice looking Exterior, Quiet Cons: Leaks like crazy; reuses dirty water
My wife has wanted this washer for the longest time with it's unique design and ability to hold larger capacities of clothes. Great reviews it had. Installed on the 10th of October and we have only been able to complete one load of laundry in this. After the first load, it has done nothing but leak all over the place everytime it drains. I had to go through the "ANDROID" process with Whirlpool's non-human interface of trying to get a technician out here as I could not get a human representative from Whirlpool. Trying the online appointment was "CALL THE ANDROID". I did manage to get an email from Whirlpool after I ripped into them for faulty design. They seems concerned, yet "surprised" that there were any problems.
Now I read all these complaints and am not even waiting for the ruined clothes. This washer is going back this weekend. (Dryer as well). I feel more trustworthy buying a used car from a scam artist then another Whirlpool product.

Total waste of money
by obutiamcalm ,Oct 16 '06
Pros: Big load capacity - all the more to rewash...
Cons: EVEN using LIQUID DETERGENT it washes poorly. Awful wrinkles. Over programmed, poor flexibility.
I have had the Calypso for 4 years exactly. Today I went shopping for a new washer because I am tired of being aggravated every time I wash clothes.
The straw that broke the camel's back was washing a small load of black cotton sweaters - out of 5 items in the "handwash" load, one didn't even get completely wet after 37 minutes of washing. So I washed that one again - by itself. The second time through it was very wet - and covered with whitish crud, lint and no telling what.
I am tired of untying knots which started out as long sleeve shirts. I am tired of having to iron clothing that never needed ironing before I starting using the Calypso. I am tired of having to wash loads twice to get out the lint, sand and crud that gets pressed into the folds and creases.

Waste of Money
by bartelkim ,Jan 12 '05
Pros: Can't think of one except its easy to load. Cons: Threw my money out the window.
I am strongly suggesting that anybody that wants a new washer, do not buy this piece of worthless junk. If you have $800-$900, throw it out the window, because thats what you are doing when you buy this machine. the clothes do not come out clean, they have more stains than I have ever seen before, the water does not drain all the time, so now you have to spin the cycle again, the "Whitest " button is a joke, your clean clothes have the soap scum left on them when the washer is done washing. My husband had asked me if I was dating the repairman because he was at our house constantly. When the salesman said that we would be saving money by buying this machine, it was a big plus, but so far we did not see any savings.

Piece of junk
by cesarcastillo2 ,Oct 11 '04
Pros: Fancy control panel. Cons: Unreliable and expensive to fix.
This machine has turned out to be a huge rip off. Although I did not pay full price for it. I still feel ripped off. I've owned it for 3 years and now it is broken down and it will cost me more than 300 dollars to fix it. It. not only broke down but it also flooded my home causing water damage. You can be sure that it's on it's way to the dump. I will not buy another whirlpool type of product again.

Steer Clear of the "Collapse-o"
by texmln ,Nov 23 '04
Pros: Digital controls, super-quiet operation, detergent dispenser, water/energy savings, roominess. Cons: Destroys towels. Questionable reliability.
Despite the horror stories I read about the machine the wife just had to have it. She loved the large, stainless tub and tons of room the machine offers. We convinced ourselves that the bad reviews we read were from a bunch of disgruntled, nitpickers who wouldn't be happy with anything. We brought the machine home and it seemed to work well. However, after about a month I noticed it was shredding our towels. The final straw came when, at only six weeks old, our "Collapse-o" started screeching during the spin cycle - the very same sound that our 8 year old washer made just days before it died. I didn't wait for the bad news from a service technician - our machine went back to the store and we switched it for a tried and true model with agitator. It's too bad really. If Whirlpool could solve the reliability issue they might have something here.

Don't Even Consider Buying!!
by nothappy00 ,Jun 23 '06
Pros: None Cons: Clothes not clean
This Calypso washing machine simply does not clean the clothes. I have had it for since Feb 2004. Dark loads come out with either soap residue or lint on them. The service tech who came out to fix my dryer that was not installed properly told me to use less detergent. He said there really is hardly any water used to clean the clothes so that it doesn't carry out the lint in the rinse. You've got to be kidding. He suggested buying the extended warranty too. I have only ever used HE detergent and no matter if I use the correct amount or less, the clothes come out the same way. The white clothes also are not really white anymore. They are dingy. I have always sorted whites from any colors and never had a problem in any other washer. My old GE stackable in my old apartment worked much better than this Calypso washer. I was convinced to buy this machine by the Sears sales person. My husband wanted to buy a basic model but I had to have all the bells and whistles. Don't waste your money on this machine.

Worst Machine EVER
by snohogal ,Apr 15 '07
Pros: No pros. Cons: See my review above.
Do NOT buy this lemon. We owned it for 6 years and it has been nothing but a headache. It has a class action lawsuit because of the problems! Read up on it. We missed the lawsuit because our repairs didn't start until 5 days after the one year warranty. Then everything went bad. Pump went out, bleach dispenser ruined clothes, rusted on the bottom, spin cycle wadded up clothes, lint was left in the clothes, pump went out a second time. Even the dryer couldn't get out all the wrinkles that it left. Finally the five year warranty we purchased was up. The next repair was going to cost $120 just for labor, not to mention another pump. We had it hauled away. I am trying to get some kind of compensation but so far, no luck.

Horrible nightmare for years
by vintagelover ,Feb 15 '08
Pros: Looked good Cons: Everything about it
I have had my Calypso since 2001. I can't even count how many times I've had to have it repaired. At least a dozen times. I was denied eligibility in the class action lawsuit because we didn't have any repairs done the first year. Very frustrating. Sears is FINALLY replacing it for us. This was my first brand new set. I had used sets before, and used them until they couldn't be fixed again. I bought this because Consumer Reports said it was the best out there at the time. Makes it hard to really trust any washer now, and CR.

Problems with pump
by t-count ,Jan 14 '07
Pros: Came in the color we wanted. Cons: Pump problems
We thought this machine would be cutting edge. As it turns out we are going to replace the third pump. It appears hair gets trapped in the pump and jams it.

Gentle but inefficient
by eugeneoregon ,Jan 22 '07
Pros: Wash cycle is gentle on clothes; comes in a pewter color Cons: Clothes do not come out smelling or feeling clean; loud
I bought this in 2001 & have had more service calls than I can remember on it. The first service calls were within the first few months of having it. By the end of this week, they will have replaced almost everything but the shell & tubs. The clothes do not come out smelling or feeling clean, & it constantly errors between the washing & rinsing cycles, so the process has to be manually started from the keypad again. I'm sure more energy is used to redo the process than is supposedly saved, as it often times stops during the rinse cycle, so it has to be restarted again. The only saving grace is that the design of the process is indeed gentle on clothes, however, it does not clean them very well at all.
